Exegesis
The Exalted said — we begin the new lesson —:
And We have certainly left of it a sign as clear evidence for a people who use reason.
[Al-'Ankabut: 35] The phrase in His saying:
And We have left
is affirmed by three affirmers, namely the oath, the lam, and
Perhapsقد
,
We have left from itتركنا منها
meaning We left from it. "Tark" here means leaving behind, and this is clear in the Arabic language; you say: I took this and left this, meaning I kept it.
We have left from it a clear sign
A sign
meaning a sign, and
A clear sign
meaning obvious and clear. The author said: "It is the visible traces of its ruin" Yes, Surah As-Saffat
(137) And indeed, you pass by them in the morning (138) And at night. Then will you not use reason?
[As-Saffat 37:137-138]
The Arabs used to pass by these towns, going and coming to Sham, and they would see from the traces of the punishment what was obvious, but they did not understand. Therefore He said:
for a people who use reason لقوم يعقلون
The author said: "They reflect" This
For a peopleلقوم
is connected to
We have left
and not to
A clear signبينة
?
The student: A clear sign

The Shaykh : Yes, both interpretations are permissible. It is permissible that the meaning is "a clear sign for those who reason," and it is permissible that the meaning is "We left it for those who reason." And regarding his saying:
for a people who use reasonلقوم يعقلون
Reason has previously been divided by us into two types: reason intended to mean perception, and reason intended to mean sound judgment. The reason intended to mean perception is the basis of legal responsibility, which the jurists say is one of the conditions for this worship, for example, discernment and reason. And the reason of sound judgment is the basis of praise and blame, meaning the one for which a person is praised and blamed. And what is found in the Qur'an is mostly this. Is the first one? This one. But in the speech of the scholars, reason is intended to mean the first meaning, which is perception. I say that the second reason, sound judgment, which is the basis of praise and blame, means that the person is good in his conduct such that he understands, with what he has of perception, what harms him from what benefits him. This is what is intended here in this verse.
for a people who use reasonلقوم يعقلون
The intended meaning is the reason of sound judgment that restrains you from what harms you to what benefits you. And the author's saying "They reflect" this is actually not an interpretation that matches the wording, because reflection precedes reason. The person reflects first and knows the beneficial and the harmful, then he reasons, so he follows what benefits him and leaves what harms him.
We have certainly left of it a sign as clear evidence for a people who use reason.
[Al-'Ankabut 29:35]
meaning, and as for those who do not reason, they do not benefit from the signs and do not take admonition from them. Yes, they reason. The intended meaning of the reason of sound judgment, what is its meaning? Because the person of reason, if he passes by them and is not insane, sees them, but he does not benefit from them; they do not become for him a clear sign.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes, no, no. They reason, meaning they conduct themselves well and are guided thereby, because if the sign does not benefit, it is not a sign.
The student: ... regarding ...

The Shaykh : This is based on what preceded in the exegesis of ... It asks: Is the intended meaning the one who witnessed it or the one to whom its knowledge reached? We previously mentioned in the exegesis of the word in the Qur'an what indicates this in Al-Baqarah. And what? The traveling in the land that Allah commanded, is it traveling by foot or traveling by the heart or both?
The student: Both ...

The Shaykh : Meaning both, individually and together, is that clear? So here we say:
We have certainly left of it a sign as clear evidence for a people who use reason.
[Al-'Ankabut 29:35]
It includes the one who saw it and witnessed it, and the one who heard of it and it reached him.
