The benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And remain in your homes and do not display yourselves as the former age of ignorance displayed themselves”
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Ahzab 33:33] In this noble verse lies the prescribed nature of a woman remaining in her home. Pay attention to this benefit, or we may say it is prescribed, because the claim that remaining in the home is obligatory contradicts what came in the Sunnah regarding permission for women to go out, but without displaying themselves. Therefore, we say it is prescribed, because the term “prescribed” encompasses both the obligatory and the recommended.
Among the benefits of the verse is that the homes of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) belong to them, based on His saying: If someone were to say that the possessive here indicates exclusivity rather than ownership, just as one says “the saddle of the horse” or “the bridle of the camel,” and if someone were to say that the possessive indicates exclusivity and that the homes of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) belong to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), what would we say? We would say that reality contradicts this, because if these homes had belonged to the Messenger (may Allah’s prayer and peace be upon him), they would not have remained with the Mothers of the Believers after his death, since the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does not leave an inheritance.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the benefit derived from the possessive: There is an encouragement to stay in the home because it is her home and her cover. The word is more eloquent than the word “in the homes,” as if it says: this home was not built except for you, as a cover for you and a protection for you. So stay in this home which was built for your sake.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the prohibition of the display of the former age of ignorance, based on His saying:[Al-Ahzab 33:33].
Among its benefits is the permissibility of displaying oneself if it is based on knowledge and the Sunnah, because what is prohibited from displaying oneself is the display of the former age of ignorance. Therefore, it is permissible for a woman to display herself in some places, and not all display is forbidden.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the condemnation of ignorance, based on His saying:[Al-Ahzab 33:33] Attributing this to ignorance is undoubtedly intended to deter from it.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the praise of what is based on knowledge. Where is this derived from? Because the condemnation of the opposite indicates the praise of its counterpart, as it was said: “By their opposites, things become clear”. If display based on ignorance is condemned, then what is based on knowledge is not condemned.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is that when encouraging or warning, one should mention every description that entails the encouragement or warning, based on His saying:[Al-Ahzab 33:33] As we said previously, “the former” is a type.
And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance
