The benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And your wealth and your children are not that which brings you near to Us in closeness, except for the one who believes and does righteous deeds…”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then he said:
And it is not your wealth or your children that bring you nearer to Us in position, but it is [by being] one who has
[Saba 34:37]
In this verse is evidence that the abundance of wealth and children does not necessitate closeness to Allah. Indeed, some people have much wealth and many children, yet they are among the farthest people from Allah. And some people have little wealth and few children, yet they are among the closest people to Allah. So is this Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the one with the most wealth and children among people? And yet he is the closest of people to Allah. And this man who boasted of his wealth and children and said:
Then, have you seen he who disbelieved in Our verses and said, "I will surely be given wealth and children أَفَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي كَفَرَ بِآيَاتِنَا وَقَالَ لَأُوتَيَنَّ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا
[Maryam:77] If Allah grants him wealth and children, it will not benefit him. Allah the Exalted said:
(11) Leave Me with the one I created alone (12) And to whom I granted extensive wealth (13) And children present [with him] (14) And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. (15) Then he desires that I should add more. (16) No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. (17) I will cover him with arduous torment. (18) Indeed, he thought and deliberated.
[Al-Muddaththir:18] until He said:
I will make him taste the burning of Saqar.
[Al-Muddaththir:26] So wealth and children do not bring one near to Allah.
And among its benefits: that the believer who does righteous deeds, his wealth and children, what do they do? They bring him near to Allah the Exalted and Majestic, because he acquires them from lawful sources and spends them in what pleases Allah the Exalted and Majestic, so he benefits from them. And the children are likewise; he attends to their upbringing and education and other matters of their benefit, so he benefits from that with Allah. For this reason He said:
but it is [by being] one who has believed and done righteousness
[Saba 34:37]
.
And among the benefits of the noble verse: that the reward for faith and righteous deeds is doubled, due to His saying:
For them there will be the double reward for what they did
[Saba 34:37]
.
And among its benefits: the affirmation of causes, from the letter ba in
For what they did بما عملوا
Yes.
And among its benefits: that the levels of Paradise are high. This is His saying
and they will be in the upper chambers
[Saba 34:37]
. The ghurfa (chamber) is the high dwelling. As for what is on earth, it is called a hujra (room), not a ghurfa. So the dwellings above are ghuraf (chambers), and the dwellings below are hujar (rooms).
Now, and among its benefits: that whoever enters Paradise is secure. Secure from what? From every source of fear. Secure from death, from illness, from the interruption of bliss, from the corruption of fruits, from everything.
and they will be in the upper chambers [of Paradise], safe [and secure].
[Saba 34:37]
And Allah knows best.
When He mentioned the reward of the believers, He mentioned the reward of others, because the Qur'an is muthani (repeated in pairs), in which meanings are repeated. So when the reward is mentioned, the punishment is mentioned, and when the believer is mentioned, the disbeliever is mentioned. This is so that the soul does not become bored if it remains on one subject, and so that the person, when reciting, is between fear and hope. And it is known to us all that if the subject is one, the soul becomes bored of it and tires of it. So when variety is introduced, there is therein an enlivening for it... Yes.
