Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: "And those who strive against Our signs to render them ineffective, those will be present in the punishment."

He said: [Saba 34:38] The author said: "The Qur'an in refutation" The word "striving" (sa'y) is used for mere movement and also for running with intensity. So in the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Jumu'ah:9], the meaning is absolute movement, not that you must run. And if I say: "He strives in the tawaf between al-Safa and al-Marwah," or "he strives between the two markers," the meaning here is running. [Saba 34:38] It is possible that the meaning is absolute movement, and it is possible that the meaning is intense movement and advancing. The latter is more emphatic, meaning that these people strive earnestly against the signs of Allah. And the author's saying: namely "the Qur'an", the reason for this is that those who do not deny the cosmic signs of Allah, but rather deny the legislative signs of Allah, sometimes ask for cosmic signs to render the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) ineffective, as Allah related about them in His saying: [Al-Isra:93]. How many signs did they ask for from the cosmic signs here? And despite that, Allah, Glorified and Exalted, said: [Al-Isra 17:93] meaning directing him that He sent a Messenger without signs upon which people would believe, and I am only a human Messenger. The important point is that the author interpreted the signs here as the legislative signs and said: "The meaning is the Qur'an". It is also possible that the meaning is both the cosmic signs and the legislative signs, because these people, just as they render the Qur'an ineffective, also render the cosmic signs ineffective. And the Qur'an was a sign among the signs of Allah because it contains what humans are incapable of. Indeed, Allah challenged humans and others [Al-Isra:88]. And He, the Exalted, said: [Al-'Ankabut 50:51]. He said: [Saba 34:38] "We are measuring our incapacity because they surpass us, and they surpass us." "Mu'ajizin" (rendering ineffective) is the one who seeks to render another ineffective, so he is the one who is rendered ineffective, just as the killer is the one who is killed. So the meaning is that they render Allah ineffective, meaning they ask, in their claim, for that by which He is rendered ineffective. And for this reason, the author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Namely, measuring our incapacity and that they surpass us." These who did that render Allah ineffective and ask for that by which He is rendered ineffective, and they say: [Al-Anfal:32]. This is rendering Allah, Mighty and Majestic, ineffective. But Allah, Glorified and Exalted, is Wise; He does not will except what He wills, and indeed He makes these matters according to what wisdom requires. Allah the Exalted said: [Ar-Rum 30:16] I told you a moment ago that this phrase is a report of what? It is the predicate of the subject. Now it is a declarative sentence. And His saying: [Ar-Rum 30:16] means present in the punishment itself, not to the Fire, but they are made present until they are placed in the punishment itself. And "punishment" means retribution and disgrace. And this is a report intended as a threat, not merely for us to know that these people will be present in the punishment and punished, but the intent is threat and warning against their deed.
