Commentary on Tafsir al-Jalalayn: ((And the Ranks [of angels] arranged in rows)) The angels arrange their souls in worship or their wings in the air, awaiting what they are commanded to do.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
But what is meant by this? The author said that it refers to the angels, and it was made feminine because they are considered groups, and groups are feminine. The deviants took this ambiguity, that is, the feminization of the angels, and said that the angels are the daughters of Allah, and for this reason they are mentioned in the feminine form. But there is no doubt that this is a form of deception and likening [Allah to creation], for Allah the Exalted mentioned the angels in the masculine form
and the angels exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord والملائكة يسبحون بحمد ربهم
[Ash-Shuraa 42:5]
In any case, the angels were made feminine because they are considered groups, for the angels (peace be upon them) are different groups, each group having a specific function. Some of them have the function of specific worship of Allah, such as glorification, bowing, prostration, and others. There are angels assigned to the protection of the children of Adam, angels assigned to the protection of their deeds and their recording, and angels assigned to other matters, some of which we know and some of which we do not know.
If someone asks who the angels are, the answer is that they are a hidden realm created from light, and Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) made them slaves in His obedience, so they carried it out in the most perfect manner. They do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, and they do what they are ordered to do. If someone says this definition is refuted by the fact that the angels can be seen, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Jibril in the form in which he was created, and he has six hundred wings that filled the horizon, and sometimes Jibril comes in the form of a human, the answer is that this is by way of rarity, and what is rare does not break the rule or invalidate the definition. The rare, as the scholars say, has no ruling.
Now, what is the basis for the angels being described as "arranged in rows"? The author said they arrange their souls in worship or their wings in the air, awaiting what they are commanded to do. This is "al-Safawat" (the Ranks), and the angels were described with it because they arrange themselves for worship, meaning they prepare for it, or they are arranged before Allah (Mighty and Majestic), as Allah the Exalted said
(165) And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer]. (166) And indeed, we are those who exalt Allah." وإنا لنحن الصافون وإنا لنحن المسبحون
[As-Saffat 37:165-166]
Or they arrange their wings in the air, awaiting what they are commanded to do, as Allah the Exalted said
Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in أولم يروا إلى الطير فوقهم صافات ويقبضن
[Al-Mulk 67:19]
So when a bird is in the air and has lowered its wings like this so they do not move, it is said to be "saf" (arranged in a row). Yes, if someone asks whether the "or" here is for variation or for doubt, or what? It is possible that this is for variation, meaning that they arrange themselves like this and like that, or it is for doubt, meaning hesitation between two statements made by the exegetes. But the first meaning is better, because this is a description of the angels, so they arrange themselves for worship, and they also arrange their wings in the air, awaiting what they are commanded to do.
