The benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And they say, ‘Are we to abandon our gods for a poet who is mad?’”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Among the benefits of the verse in the saying of Allah the Exalted
And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?"
[Al-Saffat: 36] is that these people lied about what the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah necessitates. The first is
they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah," were arrogant
[As-Saffat 37:35]
and the second, when they were told to believe in Muhammad, they said,
Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?" أإنا لتاركوا آلهتنا لشاعر مجنون
[As-Saffat 37:36]
So they did not stand by the testimony that there is no god but Allah, and they did not stand by the testimony that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Is that not so? Yes. And Allah the Mighty and Majestic always pairs these two phrases in many verses. Look at His saying,
(68) Then have they not reflected over the Qur'an, or has there come to them that which had not come to their forefathers
[Al-Mu’minun: 69]. In the first part, there is a reference to the testimony that there is no god but Allah, and in the second, “Do they not know their Messenger?” is the testimony that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
So for this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also made these two testimonies a single pillar of the pillars of Islam, saying,
Islam is based on (the following) five (principles): 1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). 2. To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers dutifully and perfectly. 3. To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity)
Sahih al-Bukhari 8
and so on, because of the inseparability of these two testimonies, and because the foundation of all worship is based on belief in these two testimonies, since the foundation of worship is sincerity and following, through which the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah is realized.
And among the benefits of the noble verse is that these arrogant people were not satisfied with their arrogance against the truth until they disparaged the one who brought the truth. Where is this taken from? From His saying,
Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?" أإنا لتاركوا آلهتنا لشاعر مجنون
[As-Saffat 37:36]
So it was not enough for them to abandon the truth; they attacked and disparaged the one who brought it.
And has this method, meaning disparaging the one who brought the truth, been inherited? Yes, it has been inherited. The people of innovation call the people of the Sunnah by every defect and ugly description. They called them the anthropomorphists, the corporealists, the literalists, the dregs, the upstarts, the common people, and similar words that imply disparagement. But Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has made an enemy from among the criminals for every prophet, and an enemy from among the criminals for every follower of a prophet. So these chosen ones inherited the best of creation, who are the messengers, and these wretched ones inherited the most wretched of creation, who disparage the messengers. And among the benefits of the noble verse is the intensity of these polytheists’ defense of their gods. Look at how they said,
Are we to abandon our gods?
This indicates the intensity of their defense of them and their pre-Islamic age of ignorance zeal. It has been mentioned previously in Surat Ya-Sin that Allah the Exalted said about these gods,
They are not able to help them, and they [themselves] are for them soldiers in attendance.
[Ya-Sin 36:75]
So the idols and gods cannot defend them, and these are troops present to defend these gods.
