Well, he says
Indeed, thus We reward the doers of good إنا كذلك نجزي المحسنين
“Indeed, this slaughter that is commanded is truly the clear trial, meaning the apparent test” This sentence is emphasized by two emphatic markers, the first being *in* and the second being the *lam*, rather, the third is the demonstrative pronoun of separation, in a clause that is implied.
Indeed, this is the clear trial إن هذا لهو البلاء المبين
There is no doubt that the matter is as our Lord, Exalted is He, said, that it is a clear trial, a great apparent test, that He commanded the slaughter of his son, in which lies his destruction and death at his hand. One of us may not be able to bear the patience of the death of his son that occurred by the action of Allah, Exalted is He, so how would one be patient to slaughter his son with his own hand? For this reason, Allah, Exalted is He, said
Indeed, this is the clear trial إن هذا لهو البلاء المبين
meaning the apparent test. So the author interpreted *al-mubin* here with what? With *al-bayyin*. But it is possible that the intended meaning of *al-mubin* is *al-muzhir*, meaning the one that revealed the reality of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, and that he prioritizes the love of Allah over what he loves. The scholars said, for this reason, Allah, the Exalted, made him His intimate friend, and intimacy is the highest type of love, where he, peace be upon him, prioritized what Allah loves over what his own soul loves.
Indeed, this is truly the clear trial, and We ransomed him إن هذا لهو البلاء المبين وفديناه
“Meaning the one commanded to be slaughtered, who is Ishaq or Isma'il, there are two opinions, with a great ram from Paradise, which is the one that Habil brought near. Jibril, peace be upon him, brought it, and Ibrahim slaughtered it while glorifying Allah” We ransomed him with a great slaughter. We ransomed whom? The one who was to be slaughtered, meaning the one commanded to be slaughtered. So Allah made a ransom for him and transferred the command from slaughtering this child to slaughtering the ram, because the thing that serves as a ransom for something is a substitute for it and takes its place. So the command transferred from slaughtering this infant to slaughtering a ram, and it became a ransom for him. And his statement
with a great ram بكبش عظيم
the ram is the large one of the sheep, meaning the large in body, and he added to that his statement
immense عظيم
meaning that it is from the great rams. Then what is this ram? The author says “It is the one that Habil brought near” How did Habil bring it near? He was the brother of Qabil, and he had brought an offering, which was accepted from him, and Qabil brought an offering, which was not accepted from him. So Qabil envied him and said to him, “I will surely kill you.” He said to him, “Allah only accepts from the righteous,” meaning if you had feared Allah, it would have been accepted from you. The story is well known regarding the two sons of Adam, peace be upon him. But what the author said is a claim that requires evidence, and there is no evidence from the Book and the Sunnah. Rather, the evidence is contrary to it, because the offering with which Habil drew near is not necessarily a ram. And even if it were a ram, it was slaughtered and eaten
Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety ولن ينال الله لحومها ولا دماؤها ولكن يناله التقوى
[Al-Hajj 22:37]
by you. But this is something that some exegetes take from the Isra'iliyyat, and such speech should not be taken from the Isra'iliyyat, because this is speech that is known to be false. And the reports of the Children of Israel, if it is known that they are false, are not permissible to transmit except by way of refuting them. And as for the statement of the author, may Allah have mercy on him, “And it is Ishaq or Isma'il, there are two opinions” the matter is as mentioned; the scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, differed regarding who was commanded to be slaughtered, whether it was Ishaq or Isma'il. And the correct opinion is that it is Isma'il, rather, it is the one who is determined, because the descriptions mentioned for the one to be slaughtered are not the descriptions mentioned for Ishaq, as appears by reflecting on the verses. And because Allah, the Exalted, said in this story, after mentioning the story of the slaughter, He said
And We gave him good news of Ishaq, a prophet from the righteous وبشرناه بإسحاق نبينا من الصالحين
and He did not mention what happened after this good news. So it is determined that the one to be slaughtered is Isma'il, and Allah knows best.
