Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: ((Say: "I have been commanded to worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion."))

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Due to His saying:
and the earth of Allah is spacious
[Az-Zumar 39:10]
And this is just as Musa said to his people:
Indeed, the earth belongs to Allah. He causes to inherit it whom He wills of His servants. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous." إنَّ الأرض لله يورِثُها من يشاء من عباده والعاقبة للمتقين
[Al-A'raf 7:128]
.
Among its benefits is the virtue of patience, and that its owner is rewarded with a reward without reckoning, due to His saying:
Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account." إنما يوفى الصابرون أجرهم بغير حساب
[Az-Zumar 39:10]
.
Among its benefits is the generosity of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), where He made the reward in the position of a wage, as if it were a transaction in which the transactor is compensated, due to His saying:
Their reward
.
Then He the Exalted said -at the beginning of today's lesson-:
Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion. قل إِنِّي أمرت أن أعبد الله مخلصًا له الدين
[Az-Zumar 39:11]
Sayقل
meaning, O Muhammad,
I have been commanded
that is, my Lord commanded me. This form comes in the passive voice because the doer is known. This resembles the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I have been commanded to prostrate on seven bones.
Sunan Ibn Majah 883Sahih (Darussalam)
I was commanded
because the commander is known, and He is Allah.
Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion. قل إني أمرت أن أعبد الله مخلصًا له الدين
[Az-Zumar 39:11]
The word
I was commanded to worship
came to indicate the status of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and that he is a servant who is commanded and prohibited, and he has no share of the right of lordship. And he said:
[Ar-Ra'd 13:36]
meaning, I humble myself to Him. Worship is used for two meanings: the first meaning is humility to Allah, which is the act of the worshipper; and the second is that which is worshipped, which are the acts of worship in all their types. Accordingly, the definition of the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah of worship in his saying: "Worship is a comprehensive name for everything that Allah loves and is pleased with, of words and deeds, both hidden and apparent" is because worship, as I said, is used for two meanings. Muhammad?
The student: ... the act of the servant

The Shaykh : Yes, the act of worship, and what is it?
The student: Humility

The Shaykh : In two meanings, the first meaning?
The student: Humility to Allah (Mighty and Majestic)

The Shaykh : Meaning the act of worship which is the act of the servant, and the second?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : That which is worshipped, which are the acts of worship. And in this meaning, the interpretation of the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah in his saying, guidance from Allah! "Worship?
The student: A comprehensive name for everything that Allah loves and is pleased with, of words and deeds, both apparent and hidden.

The Shaykh : You have done well, perfect. And here
to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him
[Az-Zumar 39:11]
includes the two meanings, meaning I worship, that I worship Him with worship. And His saying:
Sincerely
is a state of the doer of
I worship
, meaning the state of my being sincere to Allah. From what? From shirk (associating partners with Allah), because sincerity means purification, and it is purified from what? It is purified from shirk, because if an act is mixed with shirk, it corrupts and invalidates it. Allah the Exalted said in the Qudsi Hadith:
I am the One, One Who does not stand in need of a partner. If anyone does anything in which he associates anyone else with Me, I shall abandon him with one whom he associates with Allah.
Sahih Muslim 2985
