The questioner : The listener also asks: What is the ruling in Islam regarding Maggi chicken soup and the canned meats made from it in Muslim and non-Muslim countries?

The Shaykh : As for canned goods in Muslim countries, there is nothing wrong with them because the slaughter of Muslims is lawful for us. As for canned goods in non-Muslim countries, if they are in the lands of the People of the Book, namely the Jews and the Christians, then their ruling is the same as canned goods in Muslim countries. This is because the slaughter of the People of the Book is lawful for us by the explicit text of the Qur'an. Allah the Exalted said:
and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them وَطَعَامُ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ حِلٌّ لَكُمْ وَطَعَامُكُمْ حِلٌّ لَهُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:5]
and the food of those who were given the Scripture, which is their slaughter. However, if this canned meat comes from a country whose people are not of the People of the Book, and it has not become clear to us that the one who slaughtered it was a person of the Book or a Muslim, then the original ruling is prohibition.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Therefore, it is not to be eaten. As for Maggi, I dislike eating it because there is no commitment by the one who made it that it was slaughtered in the Islamic manner, unlike items that come with a label stating this commitment.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : We have only the appearance to go by. If we find it written on the label that it was slaughtered in the Islamic manner, we rule accordingly. If we do not find that, we fear that it may not be in the Islamic manner, since the one who packed it did not commit to this. Nevertheless, the original ruling for it is also permissibility if it comes from the lands of the People of the Book.

The questioner : Thank you, may Allah reward you.
