Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And if you were to ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth?’ they would surely say, ‘Allah.’”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then Allah the Exalted said:
If you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?" they would surely say, "Allah." Then how are they deluded? ولئن سألتهم من خلق السموات والأرض ليقولن الله
[Al-'Ankabut 29:61]
And if you ask them ولئن سألتهم
The address is either to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) or to everyone to whom the address is directed. The lam in His saying:
And if ولئن
is a preparatory particle for the oath, and in is a conditional particle. Is the answer in His saying:
They will say, "Allah" ليقولن الله
the answer to the condition or the answer to the oath? It is the answer to the oath, because it is paired with the lam, and what is answered with the lam is the oath, not the condition. The rule is that when a condition and an oath are combined, the answer belongs to whichever of the two comes first. The answer belongs to whichever of the two comes first. Ibn Malik said in the Alfiyyah:
And when a condition and an oath are combined, delete * the answer of what you postponed; it is then implied.
And when a condition and an oath are combined, delete * the answer of what you postponed; it is then implied.

The Shaykh : And what is postponed here, the oath or the condition?
The student: The condition.

The Shaykh : The condition, so its answer is deleted, and its answer is known from the answer to the oath.
His saying:
And if you ask them ولئن سألتهم
is a question of inquiry. Who created the heavens and the earth? It means: Who brought them into existence with this exquisite craftsmanship? The earth and the heavens are derived from the word for height, due to their elevation and loftiness, and they are plural because they are seven heavens, layers aligned one above the other. Accordingly, the second is wider than the first, the third is wider than the second, the fourth is wider than the third, and so on. And if the distance between them is a journey of five hundred years, the width of each heaven is known relative to what is beneath it, and its width is immense. And despite this, these heavens with this immense width are, relative to the Footstool, like a ring thrown into a vast expanse of land. The ring is the small ring of a helmet, thrown into a vast expanse of land. And the excess of the Throne over the Footstool is like the excess of the vast expanse over this ring. And the Lord (Mighty and Majestic) cannot be measured in His magnitude except by Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Now, if the heavens are seven aligned, and the earth is one, because He said:
and the earth والأرض
and did not say “and the earths”? We say the intended meaning is the genus. The intended meaning of “the earth” here is the genus, so it does not contradict that there are seven. And Allah the Exalted indicated in the Qur'an that they are seven in His saying:
It is Allah who has created seven heavens and of the earth, the like of them الله الذى خلق سبع سموات ومن الأرض مثلهن
[At-Talaq 65:12]
And the Sunnah came explicitly regarding this, such as the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who wrongly took a span of land, Allah shall make him carry around his neck seven earths. من اقتطع شبرا من الأرض ظلما طوقه الله به يوم القيامة من سبع أراضين
Sahih Muslim 1610a
.
if you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth?" they would surely say, "Allah." لئن سألتم من خلق السموات والأرض ليقولن الله
[Luqman 31:25]
Rather, they acknowledged that the Creator is Allah alone, just as if they were asked, “Who created you?” they would say, “Allah.” So whenever they were asked about anything pertaining to lordship, they attributed it to whom? To Allah (Mighty and Majestic) without any partner. Thus, they acknowledged the oneness of lordship to the utmost degree of acknowledgment, knowing that Allah is the Creator.
And His saying:
They will say, "Allah" ليقولن الله
I will raise an issue regarding the joining of this verb with the emphatic nun. It is known that the present tense verb is built in two cases: when the emphatic nun is attached to it, it is built with a fathah, or when the women’s nun is attached, it is built with a sukun. So why is it dammed here?

The Shaykh : Fuad
The student: ...

The Shaykh : The dammah was substituted for it?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Now, complete it, Mansur.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : If the nun is not directly attached to the verb, on this assumption, there is between it and the verb the waw of the group and the nun of the nominative case, so it is not directly attached in reality, but only in form. The verb is built with the emphatic nun when it is directly attached in form and in assumption. But this one is not directly attached in assumption, and for this reason the verb remained inflected. It is said that it is raised by the deleted nun due to the succession of similar letters, and the deleted waw due to the meeting of two static letters. This is how it is inflected.
They will say, "Allah" ليقولن الله
Allah, with the nominative case, is the predicate of a deleted subject, meaning “It is Allah.” It is also permissible for it to be the subject of a deleted verb, meaning “Allah created them.” It is also permissible for it to be the subject and the predicate is deleted, the assumption being “Allah is their Creator.” The matter in this is broad; the chapter of inflection has various aspects. Yes.
