The people of the period of ignorance before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): are they obligated by what Ibrahim was sent with, or by what 'Isa was sent with?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The people of the period of ignorance before the sending of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): were they obligated by the religion of 'Isa, which was the last to be revealed, or were they obligated by the religion of Ibrahim, who was among the Arabs?

The Shaykh : No, they are obligated only by the religion of Ibrahim, because 'Isa was sent to his people just like the other prophets. However, it appears—Allah knows best—that there is no obstacle to someone adopting the religion of Ibrahim or the religion of Musa at that time, because no messenger was sent to him.

The questioner : If someone among the Arabs presents the message of 'Isa, is it obligatory for him to believe in it?

The Shaykh : No, it is not obligatory.
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed,
(51) And [recall] when We made an appointment with Moses for forty nights. Then you took [for worship] the calf after him, while you were wrongdoers. (52) Then We forgave you after that so perhaps you would be grateful. (53) And [recall] when We gave Moses the Scripture and criterion that perhaps you would be guided. (54) And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "O my people, indeed you have wronged yourselves by your taking of the calf [for worship]. So repent to your Creator and kill yourselves. That is best for [all of] you in the sight of your Creator." Then He accepted your repentance; indeed, He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
