The reader: "And he also narrated with his chain of narration from Ibn Shuzhab, from Abu al-Tiyah, who said: I said to al-Hasan: Our imam preaches, and the men and women gather, and they raise their voices in supplication. Al-Hasan said: Raising the voice in supplication is a religious innovation, and extending the hands in supplication is a religious innovation, and the gathering of men and women is a religious innovation. There is scholarly disagreement regarding the raising of the hands, and there are hadiths, but this is not the place for them. And the difference between"

The Shaykh : And the correct view is that raising the hands in supplication includes what is disapproved, what is praised, and what is possible. What is disapproved is that in which the Sunnah has come regarding not raising the hands, such as supplication during the sermon. The hands are not raised except in the prayer for rain, and [in the prayer for] [unclear], and in the prayer for relief from calamity. The hands are raised; the imam raises them, and the people raise them following him. Similarly, supplication in the prayer, the opening supplication, "O Allah, distance," and the supplication in the tashahhud, "O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad," "I seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the Hellfire," and the supplication between the two prostrations. All of this is what is prohibited from raising the hands, because raising the hands during supplication in the prayer is not prescribed except in the qunut only, and other than that, it is not prescribed.
And among what is praised is the raising of the hands in which it is praised, such as raising the hands at the standing at 'Arafah, and raising the hands on al-Safa and al-Marwah, and what is similar to that from what the Sunnah has brought. There is no doubt that this is praised, and that the person is following the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in it. How many of these
The student: Two

The Shaykh : Good. And among what is more apparent is not raising the hands, but there is a possibility in it, such as supplication after the adhan
O Allah, Lord of this call and the complete prayer اللهم رب هذه الدعوة والتامة والصلاة القائمة
and what is similar to that. It appears that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not raise his hands, but if he raised his hands, we cannot say that he is an innovator, based on the fourth category, which is that the original rule in the etiquettes of supplication is raising the hands, due to the hadith
He then made a mention of a person who travels widely, his hair disheveled and covered with dust. He lifts his hand towards the sky (and thus makes the supplication): "O Lord, O Lord," أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ذكر الرجل يطيل السفر أشعث أغبر يمد يديه إلى السماء يا رب يا رب
Sahih Muslim 1015
, which describes him as extending his hands to the sky. This indicates that extending the hands to the sky is one of the causes of acceptance. Also, it came in the hadith
Your Rabb (Lord of the Universe) is Modest and Generous, and would never turn the hands of a slave without gain when he raises them to Him (in supplication). أن الله حيي كريم يستحي من عبده إذا رفع إليه يديه أن يردهما صفرا
Bulugh al-Maram 16:117
. In these two hadiths, there is an indication that the original rule in supplication is raising the hands. Some scholars said that if the supplication is a supplication of earnest pleading, meaning it is a supplication of insistence and need, then the person extends his hands. But if it is not so, then he does not extend his hands. On this basis, in the supplication after the adhan, the hands are not extended. In the supplication of seeking aid from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) to remove calamities, the hands are extended. Yes.

The questioner : Shaykh.
