The Shaykh :"And we believe that His cosmic and legislative will is subordinate to His wisdom" This is also important. Whatever Allah the Exalted wills, whether cosmically or legislatively, wisdom necessitates it, because His will is subordinate to His wisdom. The evidence for this is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic:
For whoever wills among you to take a right course.
[At-Takwir 81:28]
The saying of Allah the Exalted:
And you do not will except that Allah wills. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.
[Al-Insan 76:30]
In this is an indication that the will of Allah is subordinate to His wisdom. If rain falls and causes a great flood that demolishes houses and drowns crops, this is undoubtedly a harm to us in appearance; its appearance is harm. But we know that Allah did not decree it except for a wisdom. If devastating wars occur that destroy men, orphan children, and widow women, we know that this is by the divine decree and destiny of Allah, without doubt, but it was decreed by Allah for a wisdom. That wisdom may become apparent to us quickly, or it may not become apparent, but we know that it is for a wisdom. If Allah obligates something upon us,
Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you
[Al-Baqarah 2:216]
then we know that even though fighting is repugnant to us, there is benefit in it. For this reason, He said:
perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you
[Al-Baqarah 2:216]
The important thing is that you know that everything Allah decrees and ordains, or legislates, is for a wisdom. It is not possible for anything to occur in vain, absolutely, nor as idle talk, nor as play. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
(115) Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?" (116) So exalted is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth; there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne. أفحسبتم أنما خلقناكم عبثا وأنكم إلينا لا ترجعون فتعالى الله
[Al-Mu'minun 23:115-116]
And He said, Exalted is He:
(38) And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play. (39) We did not create them except in truth, but most of them do not know.
[Ad-Dukhan 44:38-39]
And He said, Exalted is He:
And We did not create the heaven and the earth and that between them aimlessly. That is the assumption of those who disbelieve, so woe to those who disbelieve from the Fire.
[Sad 38:27]
So everything Allah created, whether minute or great, from the upper or lower world, from the speaking and the non-speaking, from the moving and the non-moving, from the growing and the non-growing, is for a wisdom. But is it obligatory for us to know that wisdom?
The student: No, it does not necessitate

The Shaykh : No, it is not obligatory. Yes, it is not obligatory, because our minds are too limited to comprehend the wisdom of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. For this reason, when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the soul—the soul between our sides, by whose loss we die, which is the most specific thing to us and the closest thing to us—when he was asked about the soul, what was said to him?
Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And mankind have not been given of knowledge except a little."
[Al-Isra 17:85]
It is as if he is saying, "What remains for you to ask about is only the soul. How much knowledge has been missed by you!" And this is true. So it is obligatory, O my brothers, that we know with certainty that Allah, Exalted and Majestic is He, does not decree anything except for a wisdom, even if its appearance is that it is a harm to us; it is for a wisdom. For example, the floods that destroyed lands, drowned crops, demolished buildings, killed livestock, and killed some people are repugnant to us, but they are for a wisdom. Those who were killed in this are martyrs. The one who drowns is a martyr, is that not so? The one who dies in a collapse is a martyr. And how great is martyrdom! Martyrdom is equal to the entire world.
