Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “They will say, ‘Our Lord, You caused us to die twice and gave us life twice, so we admit our sins. Is there any way out?’”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:
They will say, "Our Lord, You made us lifeless twice and gave us life twice, and we have confessed our sins. So is there to an exit any way?" قالوا ربنا أمتنا اثنتين وأحييتنا اثنتين فاعترفنا بذنوبنا فهل إلى خروج من سبيل
[Ghafir 40:11]
They will say, “Our Lord, You caused us to die twice:” The death here refers to what was before life and what was after life. What was before life means when they were embryos in the wombs of their mothers, and what was after it is the death that occurs after existence in this world. These are the two deaths.
and gave us life twice وأحييتنا اثنتين
The life refers to when they were embryos in the wombs of their mothers, and the life after the resurrection on the Day of Judgment, or at the time of the resurrection on the Day of Judgment. Good.
This is like His saying, the Exalted:
How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life كيف تكفرون بالله وكنتم أمواتا فأحياكم ثم يميتكم ثم يحييكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:28]
These are four: two deaths and two lives. So they say: “
Our Lord, You made us lifeless twice ربنا أمتنا اثنتين
[Ghafir 40:11]
Two deaths
and gave us life twice وأحييتنا اثنتين
and two lives, because they were dead sperm, then they were given life, then they were caused to die, then they were given life for the resurrection ”
This is the exegesis of “You caused us to die twice and gave us life twice.” The first death is not a death after life, but rather a lack of life, so it is correct to apply the name of death to it. Their intention with this admission is that the matter is true. Just as we realize that these four stages passed through us—death, then life, then death, then life—we are certain that we have erred. Therefore, they said:
so we admit our sins فاعترفنا بذنوبنا
meaning, we have admitted our sins.
