The benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And whatever you differ about, its judgment is to Allah. That is Allah, my Lord; upon Him I rely, and to Him I turn back.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then He, the Exalted, said:
And in anything over which you disagree
[Ash-Shuraa 42:10]
to the end of it. Among the benefits of this verse:
First: that there must be disagreement among people, and this is the reality. That is to say, it is not possible to eliminate disagreement among people; they must differ. The causes of disagreement are many, and the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned them in his book “Raf' al-Malam 'an al-A'immah al-A'lam”, which is a concise and beneficial book. We summarized it and added to it somewhat, and we mentioned some practical examples of the rules he (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in our book, which is small and named “Ikhtilaf al-'Ulama wa Mawqifuna Minhu”, and it is beneficial.
And among the benefits of the noble verse: that it is obligatory, upon disagreement, to return to the judgment of Allah, by the saying of Allah the Exalted:
its ruling is [to be referred] to Allah
[Ash-Shuraa 42:10]
.
And among the benefits of the noble verse: that His judgment is to Allah in this world and the Hereafter, due to the generality of His saying:
its ruling is [to be referred] to Allah
[Ash-Shuraa 42:10]
. As for the one who restricted that to the Hereafter, he is in error. Even in the matters of this world, we return to the judgment of Allah, as He, the Exalted, said:
And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day
[Al-Nisa: 59].
And among its benefits: the prohibition of returning to human laws upon disagreement, by His saying:
And in anything over which you disagree - its ruling is [to be referred] to Allah.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:10]
, not to anyone else. If someone were to say: “Do you not say that the statement of a Companion is a proof?” The answer is: Yes, though there is disagreement on this; the issue is not one of consensus. But according to the view that the statements of the jurists among the Companions are a proof, we say: Yes, we say that. However, we are relying on the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
You must therefore follow my sunna and that of the rightly guided Caliphs
Mishkat al-Masabih 165Sahīh (Zubair `Aliza'i)
. Because the correct view is that the Rightly Guided Caliphs are tied to descriptions, not to specific individuals. That is to say, the Rightly Guided Caliphs are not just the four, but rather everyone who succeeded the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his community in knowledge, calling, and teaching is a Rightly Guided Caliph. The most guided of those who succeeded the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are the Companions, returning to the judgment of Allah, the Exalted.
And among the benefits of the noble verse: the declaration by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of sincerity and the oneness of Allah, by His saying:
That is Allah, my Lord.
, meaning that that which one returns to for judgment is Allah, my Lord.
And among the benefits of this noble verse: that it is part of the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to rely upon Allah alone, by His saying:
Upon Him I rely.
. But where did we take the word “alone” from? From the restriction, whose method is placing what is due to be delayed before what is due to be delayed.
And among the benefits of the noble verse: also, that it is part of the guidance of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to turn back to Allah the Exalted alone, by His saying:
And to Him I turn back.
. And if this is part of the guidance of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), it is obligatory for us to adopt it, by the saying of Allah the Exalted:
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.
[Al-Ahzab 33:21]
