Commentary on Tafsir al-Jalalayn: ((Whoever desires)) through his work ((the harvest of the Hereafter)) meaning

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
"
Whoever desires
[An-Nisa 4:134]
through his work
the harvest of the Hereafter حرث الآخرة
meaning its acquisition, which is the reward
We increase for him in his harvest
[Ash-Shuraa 42:20]
by multiplying it, a good deed to ten times or more "
The harvest of the Hereafter: The origin of *harth* (harvest) is what is tilled for growth and increase. From this comes the farmer tilling the land in order to plant it, thereby earning and increasing his wealth. And his saying:
the harvest of the Hereafter حرث الآخرة
says: " meaning its acquisition, which is the reward
We increase for him in his harvest
[Ash-Shuraa 42:20]
"
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) explained the increase in the harvest as an increase in reward: a good deed multiplied tenfold, up to seven hundredfold, up to many times. And we add another matter, meaning We will give him from this world and the Hereafter, as evidenced by his saying:
And whoever desires the harvest of this world - We give him thereof, but there is not for him in the Hereafter any share.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:20]
If We increase for him in his harvest, it is from two aspects:
The first aspect: That Allah the Exalted gives him the reward of this world and the Hereafter.
The second: That He multiplies the reward, a good deed tenfold, up to seven hundredfold, up to many times. He said:
And whoever desires the harvest of this world
[Ash-Shuraa 42:20]
meaning its acquisition and enjoyment therein. This person generally turns away from the Hereafter because he desires nothing but this world. Therefore, you find him extremely concerned with the matters of this world, to the extent that if a spot of mud gets on his car from walking on mud, he goes to clean and wipe it. But his heart is full of affliction, yet he does not strive to clean and purify it because he desires nothing but this world. You find him, for example, in his palaces, concerned only with repairing and cleaning the walls, but he does not care about building up his religion. This is what Allah Mighty and Majestic says about him:
And whoever desires the harvest of this world - We give him thereof
[Ash-Shuraa 42:20]
And We do not give him everything he desires; We give him *thereof*. The phrase "We give him thereof" is absolute, but it is restricted by what is in Surat al-Isra:
Whoever should desire the immediate - We hasten for him from it what We will
[Al-Isra 17:18]
not what he desires.
for whom We will لمن نريد
meaning that even Allah the Exalted made clear that the one who hastens is subject to His will, and the one for whom it is hastened, who is the human being, is subject to His desire. So He said:
We hasten for him from it what We will to whom We intend
[Al-Isra 17:18]
Be careful, do not think that there is repetition in the verse. No,
what We will ما نشاء
this is with regard to the one who hastens,
for whom We will لمن نريد
with regard to the one for whom it is hastened. So not everyone who desires will have it hastened for him, and not everyone who desires something will get what he desires, because the matter is in the hand of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He. Therefore, he says here:
We will give him thereof
If someone asks: The word
We will give him thereof
is the answer to the condition, and it implies that Allah will give him thereof. We say: This absolute statement, what is it? It is restricted by the verse in Surat al-Isra:
Whoever should desire the immediate
[Al-Isra 17:18]
and it is this world.
We hasten for him from it what We will to whom We intend. Then We have made for him Hell, which he will [enter to] burn, censured and banished.
[Al-Isra 17:18]
.
"
We will give him thereof
without multiplication of what was allotted to him
but there is not for him in the Hereafter any share.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:20]
"
We ask Allah for well-being.
