The Shaykh : He said: "And his saying: [An-Naml 27:62]" Is the "hamza" here disconnected or connected? The one who answers with the student's question about the difference: is it connected or disconnected? What is the difference between the disconnected and the connected?
The student: Disconnected means "bal" (but/rather).
The Shaykh : And the connected one?
The student: And the connected one...
The Shaykh : The connected one means "aw" (or), and the disconnected one means "bal" (but/rather). The second difference: the connected one requires mentioning the counterpart, while the disconnected one does not require mentioning the counterpart. He says: "Do you have Zayd or 'Amr?" Is it connected or disconnected? This is connected. This is connected[At-Tur 52:35] This is also connected [At-Tur 52:36] This is disconnected because it does not correspond to what came before it. "Or did they create the heavens and the earth" means "But did they create the heavens and the earth." So now, here, "Is there any [god] who responds to the distressed one" has no counterpart mentioned for it, so it is disconnected, meaning "bal" (but/rather). The "hamza" in "who responds to the distressed one when he calls upon Him": the distressed one, its original form is "al-mudtar" (the one who is afflicted with hardship), the one who was afflicted with hardship, the one who was afflicted with hardship... [Al-Anbya 21:83] When is the response? When? Immediately. [Al-Anbya 21:84] In the sea, the winds blow and the waves rise, so they call upon Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and He removes what is upon them. Who removes it from them? Immediately. How many times has a person fallen into distress, called upon Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and He responded to him? With the naked eye, there is no doubt about it. So who responds to the distressed one? His father? His mother? A relative? No. No one responds to his distress except Allah, Mighty and Majestic. For this reason, He said: "But note the distressed one when he calls upon Him." He specified it because the distressed one, if he does not call upon Allah, may be helped or may not be helped. But if he calls, now he has turned to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and shown his need for his Lord, and at that time mercy descends upon him. If he calls upon Him, yes. And His saying: "removes the evil" means He rescues him. And "evil" is what befalls a person, and it is less than distress, because a person may be treated badly in a way that does not cause him distress. Yes, but every distress is an evil for a person. "And removes the evil": is this conjoined? It is conjoined in wording, but is it related to what came before it, meaning that if He responds to him, He removes the evil? Or is it independent? He responds to the distressed one when he calls upon Him, then another matter: He removes the evil. The latter meaning is broader because it includes removing the evil of the distressed one. And what else?
The student: And others.
The Shaykh : And others. And according to the first interpretation, it would be specific to removing the evil of the distressed one. And it is known that the broader the meaning, the more preferable it is.[An-Naml 27:62] And this also supports the independent sentence over the other. "And makes you successors on the earth": Who makes successors on the earth? The righteous servants of Allah. [Al-Anbya 21:105] [An-Nur 24:55] This is the One who responds to the distressed one, removes the evil, and makes us successors on the earth. Who? Allah. For this reason, He said: And this interrogative is in the meaning of negation or in the meaning of disapproval, and they are close in meaning. It means: Is there anyone with Allah who does that? The answer is no, no one does that. So if the matter is thus, then it is obligatory that worship be directed to Allah. To whom should the question be directed? To Allah. Do you ask anyone to remove your distress when he is unable to remove your evil when he is unable to? No. But there remains a possibility that the distressed person calls upon other than Allah and is responded to. For example: a person is in need of food, he says to the owner of the food, "Give me some food, save me." Is this permissible or not? It is permissible, but you must believe that this is a mere cause, not independent. Allah, the Exalted, has made a cause for every thing. This cause: Allah may turn his heart away and say, "I am not giving it to you," is that not so? It is possible. And it is possible that Allah, Glorified and Exalted, makes him subservient to you and gives it to you. So when you ask, we do not say: do not ask anyone in distress. If he can remove your distress, ask him, but you must believe that he is what? A mere cause. Just as you eat and believe that this food satisfies your hunger, as a mere cause. Otherwise, if Allah had willed, you would not have eaten or been satisfied. And it is mentioned to us that a year passed over the lands, which the common people call the year of... hunger. It is not mercy. The year of hunger: they eat but are not satisfied. And a man told me, whom I met alive, may Allah have mercy on him, he said: He entered from one side of the town to buy dates for them. He entered and went to a person from there and took a date... from the owner of the orchard, the currency... the owner of the orchard... dates. So he went and came to the shop owner and said, "Give me dates." So he gave him dates. I think you know the basket... but it was not a big basket. He gave it to him and said, "Take it." Perhaps some of you know the scoop. Do you know the scoop? So he took it, but before he took it, he presented the dates in front of the coffee. Dates... so he ate... and walked... three kilos he ate and came out. He put the dates on his head, eating dates and eating. When he reached the group... he ate the whole basket with the first breakfast. He arrived... And if Allah had willed, you would not have eaten or been satisfied. All things by which the matter happens are mere causes.
The questioner : Is there any [god] who responds to the distressed one... or is there any [god] who responds to the distressed one.
The Shaykh : No, no, it is not needed.
The questioner : The interrogative comes in the meaning of negation.
The Shaykh : Yes, yes, all interrogatives, whether with the "hamza" or with "hal," come in the meaning of negation.
