The Shaykh : He said: "And from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) he said" meaning Ibn Abbas
The student: Abdullah
The Shaykh : Yes, Abdullah ibn Abbas, meaning Ibn Abbas. So the hadith is not marfu' (attributed to the Prophet), but it is from his saying. He said: This is a conditional sentence, the verb of the condition is "loves" and its answer is the clause Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 34:545 His statement: The "fa" (so/then) can be interpreted as indicating location (circumstantial) or as indicating cause. Its being for location is clear from the letter itself, because the default meaning of "fi" (in) is location. And its being for cause is because "fi" is sometimes used for cause, as in the authentic hadith meaning because of it. He said: meaning for its sake. This is according to the view that "fi" is for cause. If we say it is for location, then the meaning is "whoever loves in the essence of Allah," meaning in His religion, His Shari'ah, His love, and the like. So the meaning of "whoever loves in the essence of Allah" is not for a worldly purpose. Hatred is aversion. Meaning, he hates for Allah, or hates in the essence of Allah, such that if he sees a person committing a sin against Allah, he dislikes and hates him. And in the first case, if he sees a person performing obedience to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), he loves him.
The questioner : ... causality and location ... ?
The Shaykh : Yes, there is a difference. Causality means that the one who drives him to love or hate is Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He).
The questioner : And location
The Shaykh : Location means that the place of love or the place of aversion is what is related to the essence of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). So he hates whom Allah hates and loves whom Allah loves. They are two linked things, but the difference in meaning is clear. He said: Loyalty (muwala) is love, support, and assistance, and the like. This loyalty means he loves, supports, and assists them, and stands with them in their rank, because they are performing obedience to Allah. And he opposes for the sake of Allah. What is the meaning of opposition? Opposition is the opposite of loyalty: he distances himself from them, dislikes them, and loves their defeat and humiliation for the sake of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). For example, he loves the believers and is loyal to them, and hates the disbelievers and opposes them. He said, may Allah have mercy on him: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 34:545 It means that a person achieves the friendship (wilayah) of Allah and reaches it by this thing, by making his love, his hatred, his loyalty, and his opposition all for whom? For Allah. And his statement: The "waw" in "wilayah" allows two readings: fathah (open vowel) and kasrah (closed vowel). Some said: The meaning of "wilayah" (with fathah) is support, as Allah said: [Al-Anfal 8:72] And "wilayah" (with kasrah) means appointment or authority, meaning being a deputy for something. It is said, "This is the wali (governor) of this city," meaning the deputy for the city appointed by the ruler. So some distinguish between the fathah and the kasrah by meaning, saying this has one meaning and this has another. And some say: The meaning is the same with the fathah or the kasrah. Allah said: [Al-Kahf 18:44] What is the meaning of "wilayah"? It means taking charge of affairs and support. Whoever Allah does not support at that time has no supporter. [Al-Anfal 8:72] meaning from ... until they emigrate [Al-Anfal 8:72] .
The questioner : I say the verse ... is it not just the fathah?
The Shaykh : I do not know, by Allah, if there is a reading with the kasrah, I do not know.
He says: Yes.Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 34:545 The "ba" here is for cause, meaning because of that. And what is referred to is love for Allah, hatred for Him, loyalty for Him, and opposition for Him. This report, as you know, is mawquf (stopping at a Companion), but in reality it is in the meaning of marfu' (attributed to the Prophet), because it is in the meaning of the first hadith. A person does not find the flavor of faith, its sweetness, and its comfort, even if his prayer and fasting are abundant, until he is like that. And that is because if he is loyal to the enemies of Allah, he cannot find the flavor of faith. And how can a rational person, let alone a believer, find it acceptable to be loyal to the enemies of Allah? He sees the enemies of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) associating partners with Him, disbelieving in Him, and ascribing defects and flaws to Him, and then he is loyal to them and loves them? This would be the case even if he were in the garden for every prayer, standing in night prayer, and fasting during the day. It is not possible for him to attain the flavor of faith. It is necessary that your heart be filled with the love of Allah, love for His sake, and loyalty for His sake. And on the contrary, it must be filled with hatred for the enemies of Allah and opposition to them. Otherwise, it cannot be like that. The poet, or rather Ibn al-Qayyim, says:
"Do you love the enemies of the Beloved and claim *** Love for Him? That is not possible"
And this is correct. If a child quarrels with another child, you know what quarreling is? Quarreling is boycotting. You find each of them saying to the other children, "Are you with me or with him?" If he is with one of them, it necessitates that he opposes the other. So if he says, "I am with you," and sees the other one who is quarreling with him and him, he gets angry and says, "You have betrayed me now. How can you speak to me when you say you are with me?" I say this is known in human nature: it is not possible for anyone to love the enemies of the beloved and then claim that he loves him. Imam Ahmad said: "I saw a Christian and I closed my eyes to him" may Allah have mercy on him. He closed "in aversion to seeing with my eyes the enemy of Allah" This is the one who found the flavor of faith. As for the one who, may Allah protect us, sees that in reality the matter is serious, and sees that they are on a religion that is pleasing and acceptable, may Allah protect us, then whoever believes this belief is outside of Islam. The one who sees that the Christians or the Jews are on a religion that is pleasing and acceptable to Allah is outside of Islam, denying Allah (Mighty and Majestic).[Al-Ma'idah 5:3] [Ali 'Imran 3:19] [Ali 'Imran 3:85] And the matter, my brothers, given the abundance of Christians among us, and non-Christians as well, from the polytheists, the matter has become a great danger. And many people now do not distinguish between a Muslim and a disbeliever.
The student: ... .
The Shaykh : This ... the important thing is that we remain at the level where one does not become angry, may Allah protect us, or not care, or as if he is not an enemy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), but he is an enemy to Him.[Al-Mumtahanah 60:1] They are enemies to us, even if they show friendship, no matter what. Allah said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:51] I say, on this occasion, we are now in a trial in reality, because there is fear for our kind and our people who claim to be of us. It is feared for them that they will rely on these people, befriend them, and love them. Yes, even Satan has played with them and said: Non-Muslims are more skilled in work, more sincere, and more upright, and the like. And all of this is from the whispers of Satan. And Satan beautifies for a person obscenity, just as he beautifies for him lewdness, fornication, and drinking intoxicants. He beautifies this matter for him. In fact, this becomes more dangerous for the heart than the matter of fornication and drinking intoxicants, and the like. So this matter is very great. And we ask Allah (the Exalted) to purify this land from them. And this land specifically, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said in it: Sahih Muslim 1767a And he said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1606Sahih (Darussalam) And he said: Sunan Abi Dawud 3029Sahih (Al-Albani) All of this so that the matter is not confused for people. Yes, that is right.
So, to a certain extent, some people, meaning some ignorant people, if I say for example, "This is a Christian," he says, "Strange." He thinks that a Christian is not a Nasrani (Christian) because he claims affiliation to Isa (Jesus) (peace be upon him), so he thinks that his religion is truth and correct. And for this reason, he is surprised by this matter.
The questioner : Shaykh, the hadith is "And from Ibn Abbas..."
The Shaykh : He said, he said, what did he say? The Messenger of Allah said, yes.
The questioner : From Ibn Abbas, whoever loves for Allah.
The Shaykh : How?
The questioner : Loyalty ... my belief and my action.
The Shaykh : What is the meaning of my belief and my action?
The questioner : Meaning, loyalty is disbelief ...
The Shaykh : I did not understand. What is the meaning of belief-based loyalty? Belief-based loyalty is loving their victory, for example, their victory over the Muslims, and the like, even if he does not support them. Do you mean this?
The student: Abdullah
The Shaykh : Yes, Abdullah ibn Abbas, meaning Ibn Abbas. So the hadith is not marfu' (attributed to the Prophet), but it is from his saying. He said:
Whoever loves for Allah, hates for Allah, allies for Allah, and opposes for Allah, then it is only by that that the friendship of Allah is attained.

هنالك الولاية لله الحقfor you there is no guardianship of them
وما لكم من ولايتهم من شيءAnd if they seek help of you for the religion, then you must help
وإن استنصروكم في الدين فعليكم النصرThe questioner : I say the verse ... is it not just the fathah?
The Shaykh :
from their friendship
من وَلايتهمHe says: Yes.
For it is only through this that the friendship of Allah is attained
فإنما تنال ولاية الله بذلكAnd no servant will taste the true flavor of faith, even if his prayer and fasting are abundant, until he is like that
ولن يجد عبدٌ طعم الإيمان وإن كثُرت صلاته وصومُه حتى يكون كذلك"Do you love the enemies of the Beloved and claim *** Love for Him? That is not possible"

O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies
