The Excellence of Love for the Sake of Allah and Hatred for the Sake of Allah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message we received from the questioner, Adel Abdul Hamid Hassan, from the Arab Republic of Egypt, Minya Governorate, residing in Jordan. He says: Is love in Islam lawful or forbidden? — He means the apparent: love before marriage between a man and a woman. Please inform us, may Allah reward you?
Answer: Love for the sake of Allah and hatred for the sake of Allah is an act of obedience among Muslims, where one loves his brother for the sake of Allah and hates him for the sake of Allah; this is obedience. One loves the Muslims for the sake of Allah and hates the disbelievers for the sake of Allah. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said in His Noble Book:
You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messengerلا تَجِدُ قَوْمًا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ يُوَادُّونَ مَنْ حَادَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ
[Al-Mujadilah: 22]. Therefore, the believer should hate the enemies of Allah and disavow them. And He, Exalted is He, said:
There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, "Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah aloneقَدْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ إِذْ قَالُوا لِقَوْمِهِمْ إِنَّا بُرَآءُ مِنْكُمْ وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ كَفَرْنَا بِكُمْ وَبَدَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةُ وَالْبَغْضَاءُ أَبَدًا حَتَّى تُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ
[Al-Mumtahanah: 4]. So the Muslim hates for the sake of Allah and is hostile for the sake of Allah, and likewise he loves for the sake of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah will give shade, to seven, on the Day when there will be no shade but His. (These seven persons are) a just ruler, a youth who has been brought up in the worship of Allah (i.e. worships Allah sincerely from childhood), a man whose heart is attached to the mosques (i.e. to pray the compulsory prayers in the mosque in congregation), two persons who love each other only for Allah's sake and they meet and part in Allah's cause onlyسبعة يظلهم الله في ظله يوم لا ظل إلا ظله ذكر منهم رجلين تحابا في الله اجتمعا عليه وتفرقا عليه
Sahih al-Bukhari 660
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have the sweetness (delight) of faith: 1. The one to whom Allah and His Apostle becomes dearer than anything else. 2. Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah's sake.ثلاث من كن فيه وجد بهن حلاوة الإيمان: أن يكون الله ورسوله أحب إليه مما سواهما وأن يحب المرء لا يحبه إلا لله
Sahih al-Bukhari 16
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
Allah would say on the Day of Resurrection: Where are those who have mutual love for My Glory's sake? Today I shall shelter them in My shadow when there is no other shadow but the shadow of Mine.يقول الله يوم القيامة: أين المتحابون بجلالي، اليوم أظلهم في ظلي يوم لا ظل إلا ظلي
Sahih Muslim 2566
.
And if a man proposes to a woman whom he loves for the sake of Allah because of her religion, there is no harm. If he proposes to her because of his love for her for the sake of Allah, her religion, and her righteousness, there is no harm in that. And this is what the believer should seek, namely to look for a good woman so that he may propose to her. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good and may Allah bless you.
