Question:
This questioner is Abu Ahmad, who has used this symbol (Abu Ahmad A. A) for his name. He is from Riyadh and says: Your Eminence! We have been taught that the strongest bond of faith is love for the sake of Allah and hatred for the sake of Allah. What is the meaning of love for the sake of Allah, and what is the meaning of hatred for the sake of Allah?
Answer:
Love for the sake of Allah is that you love someone for the sake of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) because you have seen that he possesses mindfulness of Allah and faith, so you love him for the sake of Allah. And you hate him for the sake of Allah because you have seen that he is a disbeliever who disobeys Allah, so you hate him for the sake of Allah. Or he is a disobedient person, even if he is a Muslim, so you hate him to the extent of the sins he has. This is how the believer is; his heart is spacious for both. He loves for the sake of Allah the people of faith and mindfulness of Allah, and he hates for the sake of Allah the people of disbelief, evil, and sins. And his heart is spacious for both.
And if a man has both good and evil, like the disobedient Muslim, you love him for the sake of his Islam and you hate him for the sake of the sins he has. So in him are both branches: the branch of love and the branch of hatred. The people of faith and the people of uprightness are loved with complete love, and the people of disbelief are hated with complete hatred. And the one who has both branches, the one with sins, is loved to the extent of the faith and Islam he has, and hated to the extent of the sins and transgressions he has. Yes.
