The Ruling on Supplicating for Worldly Matters in Prostration and in the Obligatory Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Our sister asks: What is the supplication I should make so that it is answered for me? And is it permissible to supplicate for worldly matters, such as marriage and the like, during prostration in the obligatory prayer? I ask for an answer.
Answer: Allah prescribed supplication for His servants, so He the Exalted said:
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you."
[Ghafir:60] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said::
And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Meوَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ
[Al-Baqarah:186] Prostration is a place for supplication, and the best times for supplication are the last part of the night, the middle of the night, and the entire night. Likewise, prostration in prayer, even if it is an obligatory prayer, is a place for supplication. Likewise, the end of the prayer before the closing salam, after the testimonies, after the tashahhud, and after the prayer upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), is a place for supplication before the salam. It is incumbent upon whoever wants to supplicate to seek out these times. Likewise, between the adhan and the iqamah, supplication is not rejected. It is incumbent to seek out supplication in these times.
And among the most important of these is the last part of the night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Our lord gets down every night to the heaven of this world when a third night remains and says: (Is there anyone) who prays to Me so that I may accept his prayer? (Is there anyone) who asks of Me so that I may give him? (Is there anyone) who asks for my forgiveness so that I may forgive him?
Sunan Abi Dawud 4733Sahih (Al-Albani)
In the other wording, He the Exalted says:
Is there anyone calling upon Me that I may answer him? Is there anyone asking Me that I may give him what he asks? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him? Until the dawn breaks.
This great time is one in which the believing man and woman should have a share through tahajjud, prayer, supplication, and seeking forgiveness.
This divine descent is a descent befitting Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He), in which He does not resemble His creation (may He be exalted). He descends (Exalted and Majestic is He) in a manner befitting His majesty, and no one knows its modality except He (Glorified and Exalted is He). He does not resemble His creation in any of His attributes, such as istiwaa' (rising above the Throne), mercy, anger, satisfaction, coming, and the like. He the Exalted says:
The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established.
[Ta-Ha:5] Meaning: an istiwaa' (rising above the Throne) befitting His majesty, and its meaning is elevation and rising above the Throne, but it is an istiwaa' (rising above the Throne) befitting Allah, in which His creation does not resemble Him.
So this descent in the last part of the night is a descent befitting Allah, in which He does not resemble His creation, and no one knows its modality except He (Glorified and Exalted is He), as He (peace and blessings be upon him) said::
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
[Al-Shura:11] And as Umm Salama said regarding istiwaa' (rising above the Throne) when she was asked about it, she said (may Allah be pleased with her), and she is the Mother of the Believers, one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), she said:
The istiwaa' is not unknown, and the modality is not comprehensible, and acknowledgment of it is faith, and denial of it is disbelief.
And Rabi'ah ibn Abi Abd al-Rahman, the shaykh of Malik, one of the Tabi'un (the generation after the Companions) (may Allah have mercy on him), when he was asked about it, said: "The istiwaa' (rising above the Throne) is not unknown, and the modality is not comprehensible—just as Umm Salama said—and from Allah is the message, upon the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is the conveyance, and upon us is the belief." Meaning: upon the ummah (the Muslim community) is the belief, meaning: in the manner befitting Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He).
When Malik (may Allah have mercy on him), the Imam of the Abode of Migration in his time in the second century, was asked about istiwa' (rising above the Throne), he said: "The istiwa' is known—meaning that it is the elevation and rising above—and the how is unknown—we do not know its how—and belief in it is obligatory, and asking about it is a religious innovation. I do not think you are anything but a man of evil." Then he ordered that he be expelled. This is what Malik, Rabi'ah, and Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with them all) said, and it is the statement of all the scholars, the statement of all the scholars of the Sunnah, from the Companions and those after them. They all say regarding the names of the Lord and His attributes that it is obligatory to affirm them for Allah in the manner befitting Him (Glorified and Exalted is He), and acknowledgment of them is obligatory, and belief in them is obligatory, and asking how an attribute is is negated; no one knows its how except He (Glorified and Exalted is He). For this reason, He (Glorified and Exalted is He) says:
Nor is there to Him any equivalent."وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ
[Al-Ikhlas 112:4]
and He (peace and blessings be upon him) said::
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:11]
and He (Glorified and Exalted is He) says:
So do not assert similarities to Allah. Indeed, Allah knows and you do not know.
[The Beehive:74].
So likewise, the descent at the end of the night, the speech regarding it is one: Our Lord descends as He wills in the manner befitting Him (peace and blessings be upon him)and no one knows its how except He (Glorified and Exalted is He). And likewise, He becomes angry with the people of His disobedience and disbelief in Him, and likewise, He is pleased with the people of His obedience, and likewise, He loves His awliya (close friends of Allah) and hates His enemies. All of this is befitting of Allah; hatred, love, anger, and satisfaction, all of it is befitting of Allah. It does not resemble the anger of the created beings, nor the hatred of the created beings, nor the love of the created beings, but rather that is for Him (Glorified and Exalted is He) in the manner befitting Him (Exalted and Majestic is He), without likening Allah to creation, without denial of the divine attributes, without asking how an attribute is, and without comparing Allah to creation. This is the statement of the people of the Sunnah and the community, and it is the statement of the people of truth regarding all the attributes. So it is obligatory to adhere to this statement, to stand firm upon it, and to refute those who contradict it, and Allah is the One to be sought for help. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah bless you. So, among the recommended times for raising supplication, and among the times in which response is hoped for, is the last third of the night, where our Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He) descends, as you have mentioned.
The Shaykh: Yes, and likewise prostration, even in the obligatory prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Glorify your Lord in Ruku' (bowing posture) and exert yourself in supplication in prostration. Thus your supplications are liable to be accepted.
Riyad as-Salihin 1427
Meaning: so it is fitting that it be answered for you. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The nearest a servant come to his Lord is when he is prostrating himself, so make supplication often.
Sunan Abi Dawud 875Sahih (Al-Albani)
So if a woman asks for a righteous husband in prostration, or at the end of the prayer, or in the last part of the night, or for righteous offspring, or for lawful wealth, and likewise if a man asks his Lord to give him a righteous wife or lawful wealth, all of that is good. And marriage is from the great good; it is not from pure worldly matters, but there is good in it. In fact, it is from the acts of worship; nikah (the marriage contract) is worship, and it has many benefits for the man and the woman. So if a woman asks in prostration, or at the end of the prayer, or in the last part of the night, that Allah grant her a righteous husband and righteous offspring, this is among the best of supplications. And likewise the rest of the needs: "O Allah, make me rich by Your grace from those other than You. O Allah, make easy for me good, lawful wealth. O Allah, make me independent of asking Your creation. O Allah, grant me righteous offspring," and the like of what people need. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
