The Eid prayer is not performed in the desert or while traveling

Q: Brother M. A. A. from Tunisia says: I went to the countryside once in my country in Africa, and it happened that the day of 'Id al-Adha came. I saw the people, men and women, hastening to a cemetery to visit the graves. It distressed me on the morning of the Eid day that everyone who was present performed the prayer in the cemetery. An elderly man led them, and they all prayed behind him, except for me. I remained in confusion and astonishment at what I saw, and I did not pray with them that prayer which they called the Eid prayer. What is the ruling in Islam regarding this prayer? Knowing that the people of the countryside—whom I am referring to—have neither a mosque nor a congregational mosque, as they live in tents scattered apart from one another.
Note: When I say that they prayed in the cemetery, I mean next to it, far away from the graves.
A: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The Eid prayer is only performed in cities and villages, and it is not prescribed to perform it in the desert or while traveling. This is how the Sunnah came from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and it is not recorded from him (peace and blessings be upon him) or from his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) that they prayed the Eid prayer while traveling or in the desert.
He (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Farewell Pilgrimage, but he did not pray the Friday prayer at 'Arafah, even though that day was a Friday, and he did not pray the Eid prayer at Mina.
In following him (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) lies all good and happiness. And success is from Allah.
