Ruling on facing the grave while making du'a for the deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it prohibited to face the grave while making du'a for the deceased?

Answer:
It is not prohibited; rather, one should make du'a for the deceased whether facing the qiblah or facing the grave. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood at the grave after the burial and said:
Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now.استغفروا لأخيكم واسألوا له التثبيت؛ فإنه الآن يسأل
Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani)
He did not say, "Face the qiblah." Therefore, it is permissible whether one faces the qiblah or faces the grave. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) made du'a for the deceased while gathered around the grave.
