The ruling on standing or sitting at the grave for the purpose of making du'a' for the deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it permissible for us to stand or sit at the grave for the purpose of making du'a' for the deceased?

Answer:
The legislated visitation of graves is to intend to go there for admonition, taking a lesson, and remembering death, not for seeking blessing from the righteous buried therein. So, if one comes to them, he greets those inside and says:
As-salamu ‘alaykum ahlad-diyar minal-mu’minina wal- muslimin, wa inna insha’ Allah bikum lahiqun, nas’alul-laha lana wa lakumul-‘afiyah (Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the abodes, believers and Muslims, and we will join you soon if Allah wills. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you).السلام عليكم أهل الديار من المؤمنين والمسلمين، وإنا إن شاء الله بكم لاحقون، نسأل الله لنا ولكم العافية
Sunan Ibn Majah 1547Sahih (Darussalam)
And if he wishes, he makes du'a' for the deceased with other narrated supplications. He does not make du'a' to the deceased, nor does he call upon them for aid in removing hardship or bringing benefit, for du'a' is worship; so it is obligatory to direct it to Allah alone. There is no harm in standing at the grave or sitting for the purpose of making du'a' for the deceased, not for seeking blessing or resting, for graves are not a place for resting or dwelling such that one would sit in them.
It is prescribed to stand over the grave after burial to make du'a' for the deceased with steadfastness and forgiveness; for it is established that he (peace and blessings be upon him), when he finished the burial, would stand over it and say:
Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now.استغفروا لأخيكم وسلوا له التثبيت فإنه الآن يسأل
Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani)
