Ruling on purchasing food and tangible items from zakah and distributing them to their recipients

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: His Eminence Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz, the General President of the Committees for Scholarly Research, Ifta, Da'wah, and Guidance (may Allah preserve him)
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, and after that:
We would like to seek clarification from Your Eminence regarding the matter of spending zakah funds to purchase various food items and tangible goods, such as blankets and clothing, and distributing them to certain poor Islamic groups, such as those in Sudan, Africa, and the Afghan mujahideen. This is particularly in cases where food items are not available at reasonable prices in those countries, or are almost entirely absent, or if they are available, they are at prices double what they would cost if sent as tangible goods.
We ask you to inform us of your view on this matter, may Allah reward you with good. May Allah preserve you, and peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings.
And upon you be peace, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, after that:
There is no objection to this, provided that it is verified that the funds are distributed to Muslims. May Allah reward you and accept from you, and peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings.
