Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I received a gift, which consists of gold pens. What is the ruling on using them? And is there any zakah due on these pens or not? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
A: The most correct view is that it is forbidden for males to use them; due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan an-Nasa'i 5148Sahih (Darussalam), and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding gold and silk: .
As for what concerns zakah, if these pens reach the nisab of zakah by themselves, or with other gold owned by the possessor that completes the nisab, then zakah becomes obligatory on them when a lunar year has passed over them. Likewise, if he has silver or trade goods that complete the nisab, then zakah becomes obligatory in the most correct of the two opinions of the scholars; because gold and silver are like one thing.
