The ruling on performing Hajj and 'Umrah on behalf of several people together

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: I have many brothers. Is it permissible for me to perform one 'Umrah and one Hajj, and to dedicate the reward of both to myself and to them, knowing that they do not maintain the prayer?

Answer: 'Umrah is not performed on behalf of more than one person, and the same applies to Hajj. So it is not permissible for you to perform Hajj on behalf of a group, nor to perform 'Umrah on behalf of a group. Rather, Hajj is performed on behalf of one person only, and 'Umrah on behalf of one person only, if the person on whose behalf it is performed is dead, or if the person on whose behalf the 'Umrah is performed is dead, or is unable due to an illness from which recovery is not expected, or is very old. In that case, there is no harm in performing Hajj and 'Umrah on his behalf if it is for one single person. And if his guardian gives you money, or if the person himself who is unable gives you money to perform Hajj on his behalf, there is no harm in taking it if it is for the sake of Allah, not for the sake of worldly gain.
One who does not maintain the prayer should not be performed Hajj on his behalf. And if the dead person, or the person unable to perform Hajj due to old age or an illness from which recovery is not expected, is known to have not prayed, or to have committed something that constitutes disbelief from the other nullifiers of Islam, then Hajj should not be performed on his behalf; because abandoning the prayer is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) according to the most correct of the scholars' opinions. We ask Allah for well-being.
