The Ruling on Performing Hajj on Behalf of a Living Person

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
From the Lihay Sa'dah region in the Yemen Arab Republic, our brother Awad Jaber Dha'ir Hudlaq asks a series of questions, one of which concerns a person who wants to perform Hajj on behalf of his mother while she is still alive.

Answer:
This requires looking into her situation. If she is unable to perform Hajj due to old age, or due to an illness that is not expected to end, then he may perform Hajj on her behalf, and he will be rewarded. This is based on what is established in the two Sahihs: that a woman from Khath'am said, "O Messenger of Allah! My father has reached the age of the obligatory Hajj, but he is an old man who cannot stay on the mount. Should I perform Hajj on his behalf?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Perform Hajj on his behalf.حجي عنه
. Similarly, a man asked him, saying, "O Messenger of Allah! My father is an old man who cannot perform Hajj or ride a mount. Should I perform Hajj on his behalf?" He said:
Perform Hajj on behalf of your father and perform Umrah.حج عن أبيك واعتمر
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 930Sahih (Darussalam)
.
So if the father or mother is disabled and weak due to their old age, or due to an illness that has befallen them and is not expected to end, it is prescribed that their child or another relative perform Hajj on their behalf. Likewise, if the father or mother is deceased, Hajj is performed on their behalf. Yes.
