Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: What is the ruling on fasting the last ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah? And fasting the entire months of Muharram and Sha'ban? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: In the name of Allah, and praise be to Allah. Fasting in the month of Muharram is prescribed, and so is fasting in Sha'ban. As for the last ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, there is no evidence for it. However, if one fasts them without believing that they are special or that they have a specific distinctiveness, there is nothing wrong with it.
As for the month of Allah, Muharram, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1163a So if one fasts the whole month, that is good, or if one fasts the ninth, tenth, and eleventh, that is a recommended practice (sunnah).
And so it is with Sha'ban, for he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast the whole of it, as narrated in the hadith of A'ishah and Umm Salimah (may Allah be pleased with them both).
As for the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, the intended meaning is the nine days, because the day of Eid is not fasted. Fasting them is permissible and there is reward in it, due to the generality of his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 757Sahih (Darussalam) They said: O Messenger of Allah, what about jihad in the cause of Allah? He said: Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 7:345.
As for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it is narrated that he used to fast them, and it is narrated that he did not fast them. Nothing has been established regarding his fasting them or leaving them.

There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than those ten days.
ما من أيام العمل الصالح فيهن أحب إلى الله من هذه الأيام العشرAnd what about jihad in the cause of Allah, except for a man who goes out with his person and his wealth and then returns from that with nothing.
ولا الجهاد في سبيل الله إلا رجل خرج بنفسه وماله ثم لم يرجع من ذلك بشيءAs for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it is narrated that he used to fast them, and it is narrated that he did not fast them. Nothing has been established regarding his fasting them or leaving them.
