Q: You will find attached the book (Among Our Mistakes in the Ten Days) by the brother: Muhammad al-Ghufayli . We hope you will review it and look into the fatwa contained therein to see if it is correct or erroneous. On page 13, item 5, he states that it is an error for the majority of the general public to fast the entire ten days, and that this is a mistake... and so on. Consequently, many people in the city of al-Ras have abandoned fasting the ten days because of this book and this fatwa. For decades, many people used to fast the ten days and believed it to be a recommended practice (sunnah). However, since this book, they have come to criticize those who fast them. We ask you, Your Eminence, to issue a fatwa on this matter and publish it in the local newspapers so that the truth becomes clear to the general public.

A: Fasting the nine days of Dhul Hijjah is not an error, as some claim, but rather it is a recommended practice (sunnah) according to the majority of scholars. Shaykh Abd al-Rahman ibn Qasim stated in his marginal notes on the commentary of (Al-Zad): "Fasting the nine days of Dhul Hijjah is the opinion of the majority of scholars, and in (Al-Insaf) it is stated: without dispute." This falls under the general meaning of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Jami` at-Tirmidhi 757Sahih (Darussalam) This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari and the people of the Sunan and others. Fasting is among the best of deeds. Abu Dawud stated in his (Sunan): Chapter on Fasting the Ten Days. He narrated from Musaddad, who narrated from Abu Awana from al-Harith ibn al-Sabah , from Hunaydah ibn Khalid , from his wife, from one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: Sunan Abi Dawud 2437Sahih (Al-Albani) In (Al-Muntaqa), it is stated: It was narrated by Ahmad and al-Nasa'i . And al-Shawkani stated in (Nayl al-Awtar): "It has been mentioned previously in the Book of Festivals hadiths indicating the virtue of deeds in the ten days of Dhul Hijjah in general, and fasting is included under them. The statement of some that the intended meaning of the nine days of Dhul Hijjah is the ninth day is a rejected interpretation and an obvious error, due to the difference between the nine days and the ninth day."
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
