Explaining the virtue of fasting the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q505: The questioner asks: What is the ruling on fasting the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah? If a person intends to perform Hajj and intends to offer a sacrifice, how does he combine these?
A505: Fasting the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah is a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah). Therefore, the non-pilgrim fasts until the ninth day, while the tenth is the day of the festival, and it is not permissible to fast on it. As for the pilgrim, he fasts for the eight days, and the ninth day is the Day of 'Arafah, on which it is recommended (mustahabb) for him to break his fast so that he may strengthen himself for standing and supplication, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did. This does not conflict with his fasting the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah and intending to offer a sacrifice. However, if he intends to offer a sacrifice, then when the ten days begin, he must not take anything from his hair or his nails until he offers the sacrifice, due to the prohibition by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of one who intends to offer a sacrifice from doing so.
