Q: Why do people not pay attention to zakah now and give it its due, like the other five pillars of Islam?
A: It is obligatory for every Muslim man and woman to be concerned with their prayer and their zakah in all circumstances, and for each of them to be wary of being lax in that; because of the saying of Allah, the Exalted: [al-Nur: 56], and His saying (peace and blessings be upon him) : [al-Bayyinah: 5], and He, the Exalted, said: [Maryam: 59], and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said : [At-Tawbah 9:34] On the Day when it will be heated in the Fire of Hell, and their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs will be branded with it. This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard [al-Tawbah: 34-35].
The ruling for all wealth in which zakah is obligatory is the same as the ruling for gold and silver. Therefore, it is obligatory for all Muslims who possess wealth in which zakah is obligatory to fear Allah, to pay its zakah, to distribute it to its rightful recipients, and to beware of imitating those who were stingy with it or were lax regarding it. And success is from Allah.

And establish prayer and give zakah and obey the Messenger - that you may receive mercy.
وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَAnd they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.
وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ حُنَفَاء وَيُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَذَلِكَ دِينُ الْقَيِّمَةِBut there came after them successors who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil -
فَخَلَفَ مِن بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌ أَضَاعُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَاتَّبَعُوا الشَّهَوَاتِ فَسَوْفَ يَلْقَوْنَ غَيًّاAnd those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah - give them tidings of a painful punishment.
وَالَّذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ الذَّهَبَ وَالْفِضَّةَ وَلاَ يُنفِقُونَهَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ The ruling for all wealth in which zakah is obligatory is the same as the ruling for gold and silver.
