The discussion of the obligation of zakah.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And at that point, it is fitting for us to speak about zakah.
So we say: Zakah is a pillar of Islam. Where does it fall among its pillars? Is that right?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : The third, may Allah reward you. The first: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. The second: prayer, establishing prayer. The third: zakah, giving zakah. It falls in the third pillar; it falls, yes, its place is the third pillar of the pillars of Islam. And how often you find it paired with prayer in the Book of Allah the Exalted, because zakah is the right of wealth. So much so that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) fought those who withheld it. And he said:
By Allah, I will fight him who discriminates between Zakat and prayers والله لأقاتلن من فرق بين الزكاة والصلاة
Sahih al-Bukhari 7284, 7285
. Zakah is the right of wealth. So it is very great. It is obligatory for a person to take care of it. It is obligatory for a person to know what is subject to zakah and what is not. It is obligatory for a person to know where to place this zakah, because if he does not place it in its proper place, it will not benefit him, and his obligation will not be discharged by it.
