Question: A dispute arose between me and a group of colleagues, as we had intended to perform 'Umrah at the end of Ramadan. I should note that my colleague and I had previously performed 'Umrah several times. In the end, this colleague decided not to perform 'Umrah and instead to offer the cost of this 'Umrah as charity or for jihad in the cause of Allah. He said: "This is far better than performing 'Umrah with this money."
We ask His Eminence the Shaykh to inform us: Is it better for a person to perform 'Umrah, even if he has performed it several times before? Or is it better to offer the cost of this 'Umrah to the mujahideen in the cause of Allah?
Answer: It is better for one who has performed the obligatory Hajj and 'Umrah to spend the amount equivalent to voluntary Hajj and voluntary 'Umrah in assisting the mujahideen in the cause of Allah; because lawful jihad is better than voluntary Hajj and voluntary 'Umrah. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he was asked, "Which deed is best?" He said:. It was said, "Then what?" He said: Sunan Abi Dawud 2486Hasan (Al-Albani). It was said, "Then what?" He said: . It is agreed upon that this is authentic. And success is from Allah.
