The Shaykh : And Allah the Exalted said:
And they planned a plan, and We planned a plan, while they perceived not.
[An-Naml 27:50]
This is regarding the people of Salih, who was in the city where he was calling the people to Allah. Nine men, meaning nine individuals,
Take a mutual oath by Allah that we will kill him by night, he and his family
[An-Naml 27:49]
meaning we will kill him at night.
Then we will say to his executor, 'We did not witness the destruction of his family, and indeed, we are truthful.' " ثم لنقولن لوليه ما شهدنا مهلك أهله وإنا لصادقون
[An-Naml 27:49]
meaning they killed him at night without being witnessed, but they plotted and Allah plotted. They said that when they went out to kill him, the sky rained, so they took refuge in a cave to avoid the rain, and the cave collapsed on them, destroying them at night. Salih and his family were not touched by any harm. So Allah says:
And they planned a plan, and We planned a plan
[An-Naml 27:50]
and
a plotمكرا
in both places, the indefinite form is for magnification, meaning they plotted a great plot, and We plotted a greater plot.
Now, His saying:
(15) Indeed, they are planning a plan, (16) But I am planning a plan.
[At-Tariq 86:15-16]
They, meaning the disbelievers of Makkah, are plotting against the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) a plot, a plot without parallel in its intent to drive him away and his call. But Allah the Exalted plots a greater and more severe plot.
and I plot a plot وأكيد كيدا
Meaning, a plot greater than their plot, and greater than their plotting and scheming is what Allah mentioned in Surat al-Anfal:
And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you
[Al-Anfal 8:30]
Three opinions:
imprison you يثبتوك
meaning, they will imprison you;
kill you يقتلوك
they will kill you;
expel you يخرجوك
they will expel you. Three opinions, and the opinion of killing was the best of the opinions in their view, by the counsel of Iblis. For Iblis came to them in the form of a Najdi old man and said to them: "I want to give you knowledge. Select ten young men from ten tribes of Quraysh, and give each one a sword. Then let them proceed to Muhammad and kill him with the killing of one man, all of them, so that his blood is dispersed among the tribes. Ten tribes of the Arabs, so Banu Hashim will not be able to kill one of these young men, because each one has a tribe. And when that happens, they will be forced to what? To blood money, and you will be safe from them." They said, "This opinion, this opinion," and they agreed upon it. But they schemed, and Allah the Exalted schemes. He said:
But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.
[Al-Anfal 8:30]
They did not get what they wanted. Rather, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of his sleep, scattering dust on their heads, on the heads of these ten. Yes, and he recited:
And We have put before them a barrier and behind them a barrier and covered them, so they do not see.
[Ya-Sin 36:9]
These were waiting for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to come out, so he came out from among them and they did not notice him. Yes, look, Subhan Allah al-Azim (Glory be to Allah the Great). So the scheming of Allah the Mighty and Majestic became greater than their scheming, because He saved His Messenger from them, and he emigrated.
Now, here
they are planning a plan, (16) But I am planning a plan.
[At-Tariq 86:15-16]
we say in it what we said in:
And they planned a plan, and We planned a plan
[An-Naml 27:50]
meaning that the indefiniteness in it is for magnification. And the scheming of Allah the Mighty and Majestic against them was greater than their scheming against His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). And thus Allah the Mighty and Majestic schemes against everyone who prevails for His religion; He, the Exalted, schemes for him. And supporting this, Allah the Exalted said:
Thus We did to Yusuf
We schemed for him, meaning We did a deed by which his purpose was achieved without the one who had it being aware. And this is from the favor of Allah the Mighty and Majestic upon a person, that He protects him from the evil of his opponent by way of scheming and plotting against this opponent who intended to bring him down. So if you ask, what is the definition of plotting, scheming, and the like? Its definition according to the scholars is reaching by hidden means. Look, reaching by hidden means to bring down the opponent, meaning that you bring down your opponent by hidden means that he does not know about, that he is not aware of. This is the scheming. And in its proper place, it is an attribute of perfection, and in its improper place, it is an attribute of deficiency. But in its improper place, it has another name.
