Explanation of the author's statement: "And He said: 'So as for those whose scales are heavy, it is they who will be the successful. And as for those whose scales are light, it is they who have lost themselves; they will abide in Hellfire.'"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He said: "
(102) And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] - it is they who are the successful. (103) But those whose scales are light - those are the ones who have lost their souls, [being] in Hell, abiding eternally. فمن ثقلت موازينه فأولئك هم المفلحون ومن خفت موازينه فأولئك الذين خسروا أنفسهم في جهنم خالدون
[Al-Mu'minun 23:102-103]
"

The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Yes, this indicates that what is weighed is the deed.
Now,
So those whose scales are heavy - it is they who will be the successful. فمن ثقلت موازينه فأولئك هم المفلحون
[Al-A'raf 7:8]
.
"Whoever" is a conditional particle, and the answer to the condition is the sentence:
It is they who will be the successful. فَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
. The conditional sentence, or the consequential sentence, or the answer sentence, came as a nominal sentence with the attribute of restriction
It is they who will be the successful. فَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
. Let us reflect on this sentence a little.
First: it came as a nominal sentence, and a nominal sentence signifies permanence and continuity.
Second: it came with the demonstrative pronoun indicating distance
These are أُولَئِكَ
, and it did not say: "they are the successful." He said:
Those أولئك
indicating the elevation of their rank.
Third: it came with the form of restriction in his saying:
They هم
, because "ham" is a particle of separation that signifies restriction and emphasis, and what else? And the separation between the predicate and the attribute.
The successful one: he is the one who attained what he sought and was saved from what he feared, so two things came together for him: safety from what is disliked, and obtaining what is loved. And so, whenever "successful" appears in the Qur'an, this is its meaning—that in the Qur'an or in the Sunnah—it is the one who attained what he sought and was saved from what he feared.
And his saying:
So those whose scales are heavy - it is they who will be the successful. فَمَنْ ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
[Al-A'raf 7:8]
contains a problem from the perspective of Arabic grammar, for
Their scales. مَوَازِينُهُ
the pronoun is singular, and
It is they who will be the successful. أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
the pronoun is plural, so how is that? Or what is the point of that?
The point is that
Who من
the conditional "man" is suitable for both singular and plural, so considering the wording, the pronoun refers to it in the singular. And considering the meaning, the pronoun refers to it in the plural.
And so, whenever "man" appears, it is permissible to refer the pronoun to it in the singular or in the plural. In the singular if you consider the wording, and in the plural if you consider the meaning.
And it is frequent in the Qur'an. Allah the Exalted said at the end of Surat al-Talaq:
And whoever believes in Allah and does righteousness - He will admit him into gardens beneath which rivers flow وَمَنْ يُؤْمِنْ بِاللَّهِ وَيَعْمَلْ صَالِحاً يُدْخِلْهُ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ
[At-Talaq 65:11]
Up to now the pronouns are in the singular.
abiding therein forever خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا
What? Plural
forever. Allah will have perfected for him a provision. أَبَداً قَدْ أَحْسَنَ اللَّهُ لَهُ رِزْقاً
[At-Talaq 65:11]
This is singular. So you find the noble verse contains consideration of the wording, then the meaning, then the wording. Yes.
He said:
And those whose scales are light - they are the ones who will lose themselves وَمَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ
[Al-A'raf 7:9]
These have lost themselves, and the indication here is for distance, due to the lowliness of their rank, not due to the elevation of their rank, for the distant one may be distant due to the elevation of his rank, or due to the lowliness of his rank.
He said:
who have lost their souls, [being] in Hell, abiding eternally. خَسِرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ في جهنم خالدون
[Al-Mu'minun 23:103]
And Allah, this is correct, this is the one who lost himself, and he also lost his family and his wealth. The disbeliever may have lost himself, his family, and his wealth
Say, "Indeed, the losers are the ones who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection قُلْ إِنَّ الْخَاسِرِينَ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَأَهْلِيهِمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
[Az-Zumar 39:15]
.
Whereas the believer who does righteous deeds may have profited; he profited in himself, his family, and his wealth, and benefited from that. These have lost themselves, because they did not benefit from their worldly life, did they?
I mean, the disbelievers lost themselves because they did not benefit from their existence in the world at all, rather, what did they benefit from? Only harm, refuge in Allah.
They lost their wealth, because they did not benefit from it, even if they gave it to creation so that creation might benefit from it, it does not benefit them.
And what prevents their expenditures from being accepted from them but that they have disbelieved in Allah and in His Messenger وَمَا مَنَعَهُمْ أَنْ تُقْبَلَ مِنْهُمْ نَفَقَاتُهُمْ إِلَّا أَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِ
[At-Tawbah 9:54]
, even if the disbeliever built bridges and dams, and facilitated roads, and did a lot in public utilities, that does not benefit him. The most that can be said is that if he is rewarded for it, he is rewarded in this world only, otherwise he has no share in the Hereafter; he has no portion in the Hereafter.
They lost themselves, their families, how? Yes, because they are in the Fire. If their families are in Paradise, then these are in Paradise and these are in the Fire. And if their families are in the Fire, then every person in the Fire does not find comfort with his family, rather, refuge in Allah, he is locked in a coffin, and he does not see anyone more severely punished than him. So they lost themselves, their wealth, and their families. For this reason, Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:
those are the ones who have lost their souls, [being] in Hell, abiding eternally. فأولئك الذين خسروا أنفسهم في جهنم خالدون
[Al-Mu'minun 23:103]
.
Then the author said: "And the registers are spread, and they are the scrolls". Now, are there questions on this paragraph about the scales?
