The Shaykh : He says: "When they cross it, they will be stopped at a bridge between Paradise and the Fire, and they will take retribution from one another".
"The bridge" is a bridge, but it is a small bridge.
The scholars differed regarding this bridge: is it the end of the bridge over Hell, or is it a separate bridge?
The correct position in this matter is to say: Allah knows best, and it does not concern us what its nature is, whether it is the end of the bridge over Hell or a separate bridge. What concerns us is that people are stopped upon it.
"And they will take retribution from one another". This retribution is not the first retribution that takes place on the plain of Resurrection, because this is a more specific retribution, a retribution in order to remove the resentment, hatred, and enmity that are in the hearts of people. Thus, this is like purification and cleansing, because what is in the hearts does not disappear merely through retribution, does it? I mean, if someone wronged you in your wealth and then returned your wealth after the claim, he is saved from the sin, but do the effects of this injustice remain in the soul? Yes, generally they remain. Likewise, if he attacked you with a beating and you took retribution from him, and then he was saved from the sin, but something remains in the soul.
So this bridge between Paradise and the Fire, where they take retribution from one another, is for what? To purify what is in the hearts so that they enter Paradise without any resentment in their hearts, as Allah the Exalted said:
And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.
[Al-Hijr 15:47]
.
When they are refined and purified, they are permitted to enter Paradise.
When they are refined from the enmity and hatred in their hearts and purified from it, they are permitted to enter Paradise. When they are permitted to enter, will they find the gate open? No, they do not find it open? They find it closed, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intercedes with Allah to have the gate of Paradise opened for them.
And for this reason he says:
And the first to seek to open
No,
And the first to seek to open the gate of Paradise is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the first to enter Paradise from among the nations is his Ummah (peace and blessings be upon him)
.
He is the one who intercedes with Allah (Mighty and Majestic) to have the gate of Paradise opened, and it is opened. This is from the grace of Allah upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The first intercession he performs on the plain of Resurrection is to remove the distress, worries, and sorrows, and the second is to attain joy and happiness. Thus, he is an intercessor for the creation (peace and blessings be upon him) in repelling what harms them and bringing what benefits them, in both of these matters.
And we said: There is no entry into Paradise except after the intercession of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), because this is established in the Sunnah, and Allah the Exalted alluded to it in His saying:
until, when they reach it while its gates have been opened and its keepers say
[Az-Zumar 39:73]
and so on. He did not say: "Until when they come to it, it opened," but rather He said:
and its gates were opened وفُتحت
. In this is an indication that there is something, ah, before the opening. As for the people of the Fire, He said about them:
until, when they reach it, its gates are opened
[Az-Zumar 39:71]
. Because they find it prepared, may Allah protect us, but this does not happen except after the intercession.
