The questioner : When carrying the deceased to the cemetery, they recite: "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," in a collective voice. And in the evening, they gather in the deceased's house and glorify Allah by saying: "There is no god but Allah," fifty-seven times, claiming that this practice alleviates the sins of the deceased. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding this practice, and what is the Sunnah in this matter? May you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : This is among the religious innovations (bid'ah) introduced by its innovators. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against it with the utmost severity, even saying:
Every innovation is misguidance. كل بدعة ضلالة
Therefore, it is obligatory to refrain from this. The deceased does not benefit from this thing they do, which is an innovation, because there is no reward in an innovation. If there is no reward for the doer, how can there be reward for the one for whom it is done?
Likewise, their gathering in the deceased's house and saying: "There is no god but Allah," fifty-seven times, this is also among the religious innovations. This is an innovation in its essence and in its number. They must stop.
The best thing to do for the deceased is that when he is finished being buried, one stands at the grave and seeks forgiveness for him and asks for steadfastness. One asks Allah (Mighty and Majestic) to make him steadfast. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he was finished burying the deceased, would stand over him and say:
Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now. استغفروا لأخيكم واسألوا له التثبيت فإنه الآن يسأل
Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani)
So a person stands at the grave and says: "O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, make him steadfast with the firm word, O Allah, make him steadfast with the firm word, O Allah, make him steadfast with the firm word." Or he may limit himself to saying: "O Allah, make him steadfast, O Allah, make him steadfast, O Allah, make him steadfast." Then he departs. This is the Sunnah.
