Question: Allah the Exalted said: [Surat al-Baqarah:187]. What is the ruling on one who completed his pre-dawn meal and drank his water at the time of the call to prayer, or during the call to prayer, or a quarter of an hour after the dawn call to prayer?
Answer: If the person mentioned in the question knows that it was before the appearance of dawn, he owes nothing. If he knows that it was after the appearance of dawn, he has to make up the fast. As for if he does not know whether his eating and drinking was after the appearance of dawn or before it, he owes nothing; because the presumption is the continuation of the night. However, the believer should be scrupulous regarding his fast and should abstain from things that break the fast when he hears the call to prayer, unless he knows that this call to prayer was before dawn.
The most cautious course for one who ate or drank after the call to prayer is to make up the fast, unless he knows that the one who called to prayer called before dawn. And success is from Allah.
