Question: The questioner, brother H. M. A. from Irbid in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, says in his question: My mother and my father are advanced in age, and I wish to perform Hajj on behalf of both of them in a single Hajj. Is that permissible for me? And is there a difference between performing Hajj on behalf of a deceased person and a living person? Please guide us. May Allah prolong your life in His obedience.
Answer: If your parents are unable to perform Hajj and 'Umrah due to their advanced age, it is prescribed for you to perform Hajj on behalf of each one separately, and to perform 'Umrah on behalf of each one; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked by some people about something like this. The questioner said, “O Messenger of Allah, my father is an old man who is unable to perform Hajj or travel. Should I perform Hajj and 'Umrah on his behalf?” He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 930Sahih (Darussalam) A woman from Khath'am also asked him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, my father is an old man who cannot stay on the mount. Should I perform Hajj on his behalf?” He said: It is agreed upon that it is authentic. It is not permissible for you to perform Hajj on behalf of both of them in a single Hajj, nor to perform 'Umrah on behalf of both of them in a single 'Umrah, because Hajj is not performed on behalf of more than one person, and the same applies to 'Umrah. There is no doubt that performing Hajj and 'Umrah on their behalf is among the greatest ways of being dutiful to them. May Allah guide you and every Muslim to that which brings Him pleasure. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Near One.
