Illness is a legitimate religious excuse for breaking the fast

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: I fell ill with a severe illness that compelled me to travel outside the Islamic world for treatment. Ramadan arrived while I was abroad, and the Christian doctor ordered me to break my fast, claiming that the medication might harm me if I did not eat, especially water. This forced me to break my fast, and the doctor asked me to continue the treatment for a long period. When I returned, I consulted a Muslim doctor, who also asked me to break my fast this year. I tried fasting, but I felt my health deteriorate. What must I do regarding this situation? And do I have to feed people in place of fasting, considering that I am an employee with a limited income? I ask for your guidance.

Answer: There is no blame on you, my brother, in breaking your fast as long as you feel the illness, are exhausted by fasting, and your doctors have advised you to do so. There is no blame on you. Likewise, if the medications are regular and you need them during the day, it is permissible for you to break your fast; for Allah the Exalted said:
and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days وَمَن كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
[al-Baqarah: 185].
Even if you did not have a doctor and you felt an illness that made fasting difficult for you, it is prescribed for you to break your fast due to the presence of the illness, by the explicit text of the Noble Qur'an. Illness is a legitimate religious excuse, just like travel. So whenever you find hardship upon you because of the illness, you may break your fast, even if you did not consult a doctor about it. And you must make up the fasts, and praise be to Allah if you are cured of the illness, even after a long time; for Allah the Exalted said:
and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other daysوَمَن كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:185]
The meaning is: so he must fast other days equal to the number of days he broke.
So, my brother, if Allah cures you and your health is restored, you must make up the fasts, and praise be to Allah. There is no blame on you in that, and be glad of good. May Allah cure you and grant you well-being.
