Ruling on one who doubts the number of circuits
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: We went for Hajj, and during the tawaf and after finishing it, some of us said that we had completed the seven circuits, while others said that one circuit remained. So some of us stayed to perform another circuit, while others left, and I was among those who left. What is the ruling on the Hajj, and is it valid?
Answer: If those who left, including you, left believing that they had completed the seven circuits, then the tawaf is valid, and praise be to Allah. As for those who doubted, they must complete a seventh circuit if the interval has not been long. If the interval has been long, they must repeat the tawaf. As for those who left without being certain that they had completed the seven, they must return to Makkah and perform the tawaf in full, along with repentance and seeking forgiveness for the shortcoming that occurred. If any of them had intercourse with his wife, or if a woman’s husband had intercourse with her, they must also slaughter a sheep to be slaughtered in Makkah; because it is not permissible for a man to have intercourse with his wife before the tawaf, and likewise, it is not permissible for her husband to have intercourse with her before she completes the tawaf—I mean the tawaf of Ifadah—and its meat is to be distributed to the poor in Makkah.
As for the one whose doubt arose after the completion of the tawaf and his departure from the tawaf area, as is your case, believing that it was complete, then he owes nothing, and he should not pay attention to this doubt. This ruling applies to all acts of worship: one should not pay attention to a doubt that arises after the completion of the act. And success is from Allah.
