The Ruling on Free Mixing in Celebrations

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Is free mixing permissible in weddings, and is it permissible for men to dance with women, whether they are mahram (relatives one may not marry) or non-mahram? And if the men are alone, is there anything wrong with that?

Answer: Marriage is prescribed to be public and displayed, with the hand drum for women. As for the free mixing of men and women, it is not permissible if they are non-mahram; indeed, this is a major sin that must be prevented. However, the presence of some mahram, such as a man with his sisters or his maternal aunts, does not cause harm in their presence with their mahram. But for him to dance with them is not appropriate, because it may lead to corruption. This is effeminacy, which is not befitting a man, and it may lead to evil, even if they are mahram. But it is not appropriate to do that. This should be reserved for women only, and they should not be exposed to men, nor should they be with men.
Then, this may lead to bad suspicion and accusation against this man and these women who play with their brothers or their maternal uncles. A person is in danger, for Satan calls to lewdness. It is not befitting a man to be with his sisters dancing with them, or with his maternal aunts. Rather, he should stay away from this and elevate himself above it.
As for with a non-mahram, this is forbidden and a major sin without doubt. We ask Allah for safety. If the men are alone, with weapons and archery, or with Arabic poetry, there is no harm in them being alone. But drums are not allowed, or with reprehensible songs.
