The widow in her waiting period must remain in the house in which her husband died

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: From 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz, to the sister in Allah / the mother of A. N. S. — May Allah guide her to all that is good, amen.
Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. As for what follows:
Your noble letter, dated the first of Muharram 1414 AH, has reached us, may Allah guide you. The questions it contained were known, and here are the answers:
First: Does the wife have the right to remain in the deceased's house... and so on?
Second: Are you obligated to provide for her... and so on?

Answer: It is obligatory for the wife of a deceased man to observe her waiting period in the house in which she was residing at the time of his death, unless a valid legal excuse prevents this; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the widow:
Stay in your house until what is written reaches its term.امكثي في بيتك حتى يبلغ الكتاب أجله
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1204Sahih (Darussalam)
.
However, if she has a valid legal excuse for not observing the waiting period in the house, there is no harm in her observing it elsewhere. S. 'A. asked me about this and informed me that she had a valid legal excuse to move, so I issued a ruling that it is permissible for her to do so.
As for the possessions in the house, you can preserve them through trustworthy people you deem suitable, by agreement with the wife's family, if they are part of the estate.
If they belong specifically to her, she can move them or preserve them by possible means, in consultation with her family.
Second: Are you obligated to provide for her... and so on?
Answer: You are not obligated to provide for her; rather, her maintenance comes from her own wealth.
May Allah guide everyone to what pleases Him, console you in your loss, make your consolation good, and have mercy on him with a vast mercy, and reform his son, making him a delight to the eye.
And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
