The Meaning of the Verse {If you avoid the major sins you are forbidden from...}

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Who is it that rebukes the one who listens to songs and magazines and looks at women, saying:
If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sinsإِنْ تَجْتَنِبُوا كَبَائِرَ مَا تُنْهَوْنَ عَنْهُ نُكَفِّرْ عَنْكُمْ سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ
[Al-Nisa:31]?

Answer:
What is its meaning? It is not the permission of sins. Its meaning is: that avoiding major sins is among the causes for the expiation of minor sins.
And regarding the definition of major sins, there is scholarly disagreement: what is a major sin?
So it is obligatory to be cautious of all sins. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Avoid that which I forbid you to do and do that which I command you to do to the best of your capacityما نهيتكم عنه فاجتنبوه، وما أمرتكم فأتوا منه ما استطعتم
Sahih Muslim 1337b
, and Allah says:
And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain fromوَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوا..
[Al-Hashr:7]. So it is obligatory to cease from what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, whether minor or major sins, all sins, all transgressions; one must be cautious of them all.
Q: And if we reply to him and say: there is no minor sin with persistence, and it becomes in the ruling of a major sin?
The Shaykh: As Ibn Abbas said, and also, what Allah has forbidden must be avoided, and He commanded us to avoid what He has forbidden us from
And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain fromوَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوا..
[Al-Hashr:7].
