Ruling on Making a Man's Islam or Teaching the Qur'an as the Bridal Gift

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is well known about Umm Sulaym making Abu Talhah's Islam her bridal gift?

Answer:
Some scholars hold that there is nothing wrong with making a man's Islam or teaching the Qur'an as the bridal gift. However, the revelation of the verse in Surat al-Nisa, which is a Medinan verse,
that you seek them [in marriage] with [gifts from] your propertyأَنْ تَبْتَغُوا بِأَمْوَالِكُمْ
[al-Nisa:24], indicates that money is necessary. Perhaps the story of Umm Sulaym occurred before the revelation of the verse. It is obligatory to stipulate money, even if it is a small amount,
that you seek them [in marriage] with [gifts from] your propertyأَنْ تَبْتَغُوا بِأَمْوَالِكُمْ
[al-Nisa:24].
