Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, Zuhayr ibn Harb, and Ibn Numayr all narrated from Sufyan. Zuhayr said: Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah narrated to us from 'Amr from Abu al-'Abbas al-Sha'ir al-A'ma from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) besieged the people of Ta'if, but did get victory over them. He said: God willing, we shall return. His Companions said: Shall we depart without having conquered it? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: (All right) make a raid in the morning. They did so. and were wounded (with the arrows showered upon them). So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: We shall depart tomorrow. (The narrator says): (Now) this (announcement) pleased them, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) laughed at (their waywardness).
Sahih Muslim 1778

The Shaykh : This is part of his wisdom (peace and blessings be upon him) that they directly experienced the harm. This is of the same kind as when he forbade them from continuous fasting (wasal), but they refused to do anything but continue it. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued it with them and left them to continue, and by wasal I mean that a person does not break his fast between two days. They continued and continued until the sighting of the Shawwal crescent, when he said:
If the crescent had delayed, I would have continued fasting (because of you)
Sahih al-Bukhari 7299
, as if he was discouraging them, until a person sees the thing directly.
