The reciter: And Muhammad ibn Hatim narrated to us, and Hajjaj narrated to us from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Abu al-Zubayr informed me that he heard Jabir being asked, "How many were you on the day of al-Hudaybiyyah?" He said:
We were fourteen hundred, so we pledged allegiance to him, and 'Umar was holding his hand under the tree, which was a tamarisk tree, so we pledged allegiance to him, except for Jad ibn Qays al-Ansari, who hid under the belly of his camel. كُنَّا أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ مِائَةً، فَبَايَعْنَاهُ، وَعُمَرُ آخِذٌ بِيَدِهِ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ، وَهِيَ سَمُرَةٌ، فَبَايَعْنَاهُ غَيْرَ جَدِّ بْنِ قَيْسٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، اخْتَبَأَ تَحْتَ بَطْنِ بَعِيرِهِ
