Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then the author mentioned the hadith of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her):
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that an army will march against the Ka'bah
: The Noble Ka'bah, may Allah protect it and save it from all evil. This Ka'bah is the House of Allah, built by Ibrahim and his son Isma'il. They were raising the foundations of the House and saying:
"Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing. ربنا تقبل مِنا إنك أنت السميع العليم
[Al-Baqarah 2:127]
. This House was the target of Abraha, who wanted to invade it from Yemen. He invaded it with a great army, with a great elephant at its head, intending to demolish the Ka'bah, the House of Allah. When he approached the Ka'bah and reached a place called al-Mughammis, the elephant became obstinate; it became obstinate and refused to move forward. They kept urging it to advance toward the Ka'bah, but it refused. Whenever they turned it toward Yemen, it would run and speed up. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said during the expedition of al-Hudaybiyyah, when his she-camel became obstinate and refused to walk, the Companions said:
Al-Qaswa' (i.e. the she-camel's name) has become stubborn! Al-Qaswa' has become stubborn!
Sahih al-Bukhari 2731, 2732
meaning: it has become obstinate. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Al-Qaswa' has not become stubborn, for stubbornness is not her habit
Sahih al-Bukhari 2731, 2732
. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was defending a beast, because injustice is not permissible, even toward beasts. He said:
Al-Qaswa' has not become stubborn, for stubbornness is not her habit
Sahih al-Bukhari 2731, 2732
: that is not its habit.
but He Who restrained the elephant has restrained her
Sunan Abi Dawud 2765Sahih (Al-Albani)
The one who held back the elephant is the Lord, Mighty and Majestic:
By the Name of Him in Whose Hands my soul is, if they (i.e. the Quraish infidels) ask me anything which will respect the ordinances of Allah, I will grant it to them.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2731, 2732
.
The important point is that the Ka'bah was invaded from Yemen by a great army led by this great elephant to demolish the Ka'bah. When they reached al-Mughammis, the elephant refused to walk and became obstinate. They urged it, but it was of no use. So they remained there, held back, and Allah sent upon them birds in flocks. Ababil means: many groups. Birds that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent, each bird carrying a stone held in its foot, then releasing it upon one of them until it struck him on the top of his head and came out of his backside.
And He made them like eaten straw.
[Al-Fil 105:5]
: as if they were crops eaten by livestock. They were crushed into the ground. In this, Umayyah ibn al-Salt says:
"It held back the elephant at al-Mughammis *** until it crept along as if it were bound" ,
So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, protected His House from the plot of this tyrannical king, who came to demolish the House of Allah. And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said:
and [also] whoever intends [a deed] therein of deviation [in religion] or wrongdoing - We will make him taste of a painful punishment.
[Al-Hajj 22:25]
. In the last of time, a group will invade the Ka'bah, a group with a great army.
An army against the Ka'bah, until when they were in a wide, open stretch of land
Sahih Ibn Hibban 62:639
: meaning in a wide, open land.
Allah will swallow up the first of them and the last
: the earth will swallow them up, the earth will swallow them up, the earth will swallow them and they will sink into it, they and their markets and everyone with them. In this is evidence that it is a great army, because they have their markets with them, buying and selling and other things. So Allah will swallow up the first of them and the last. When he said this, a question came to the mind of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her):
How will they sink into the ground while amongst them will be their markets (the people who worked in business and not invaders) and the people not belonging to them?
Sahih al-Bukhari 2118
? Their markets, those who came for buying and selling, did not come with a bad intention to invade the Ka'bah, and among them were people who were not part of them, who followed them without knowing their plan. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The earth will be swallowed up by them, from the first to the last, and their markets, and those who are not among them. Then they will be raised on the Day of Resurrection according to their intentions.
, each one will have what he intended. And this is an instance of the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
, and in this hadith is a lesson.
