Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then he said:
O Muhammad, tell me about Islam
Musnad Ahmad 367, 368Lts isnad is Sahih, Muslim (8)
: And he did not say, "O Messenger of Allah, inform me," which is the practice of the Bedouin, the Arabs, because when a Bedouin comes to the Prophet (peace be upon him), he says, "O Muhammad." As for those who have heard the etiquette that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) prescribed for them, they do not say "O Muhammad," but rather they say, "O Messenger of Allah," because Allah the Exalted said in His Book:
Do not make [your] calling of the Messenger among yourselves as the call of one of you to another.
[An-Nur 24:63]
, and this includes calling him by his name when addressing him, and it includes calling him when he commands or forbids. So we do not treat his command as the command of people, where if we wish we obey and if we wish we leave it, and we do not treat his prohibition as the prohibition of people, where if we wish we leave it and if we wish we do it. Likewise, when we call him, we do not call him as we call one another, saying, "So-and-so, so-and-so," just as you call your companion, saying, "O 'Abd Allah, O 'Ali, O Khalid, O Bakr," but rather you say, "O Messenger of Allah."
But the Bedouins, due to their distance from knowledge and the ignorance of most of them, when they came, they said: "O Muhammad."
He said:
Tell me about Islam
meaning, what is Islam? So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah
Sahih Muslim 8a
: This is one thing: you testify with your tongue by speaking, and with your heart by affirming, that there is no god but Allah, meaning: there is no true object of worship but Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). The oneness of worship of Allah is a branch of His oneness of lordship, because whoever worships Allah has affirmed His lordship, since the object of worship must be a Lord. It is also necessary that He be perfect in His attributes. For this reason, we find, or you find, that those who deny the attributes of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) have a great deficiency in their servitude, because they worship whom? Nothing. The Lord must be perfect in His attributes so that He is worshipped in accordance with these attributes. For this reason, Allah the Exalted said:
And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them
[Al-A'raf 7:180]
"Call upon Him": meaning, worship Him and seek nearness to Him through His names to attain what you seek. So supplication here includes supplication of asking and supplication of worship. The important point is that he said: "that you testify that there is no god but Allah." So there is no god among the creation: no angel brought near, no prophet sent, no sun, no moon, no tree, no stone, no land, no sea, no close friend of Allah, no truthful one, no martyr. There is no god but Allah alone. And this word was sent by Allah with all the messengers. So Allah the Exalted said:
And We sent not before you any messenger except that We revealed to him that, "There is no deity except Me, so worship Me."
[Al-Anbya 21:25]
, and He the Exalted said:
And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allah and avoid Taghut."
[An-Nahl 16:36]
,
Worship Allah and avoid Taghut
[An-Nahl 16:36]
: "Keep away from shirk (associating partners with Allah)." If a person realizes this word and says it from his heart, committing to what it entails of faith and righteous deeds, he will enter Paradise by it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If anyone’s last words are ‘There is no god but God,’ he will enter paradise.
Mishkat al-Masabih 1621
: May Allah make us and you among them.
that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah
Sahih Muslim 8a
He did not mention any of the other messengers, because he abrogated all the religions. Everything that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought is an abrogation of the religions before him. All religions are invalid with the sending of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). So the religion of the Jews is invalid, and the religion of the Christians is invalid and not acceptable to Allah, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.
[Ali 'Imran 3:85]
. They toil in their worship which they innovated, toiling greatly and straining themselves greatly, and all of this is vapor that does not benefit them in anything. It will not be accepted from them
and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.
[Ali 'Imran 3:85]
: even if they had gained in this world, they would not have gained in the Hereafter, because their religions are invalid. So those who claim now among the Christians that they are followers of the Messiah, 'Isa ibn Maryam, are liars, and the Messiah is innocent of them. If the Messiah were to come, he would fight them, and he will descend at the end of time and will not accept anything but Islam. He will break the cross, kill the pig, and abolish the jizyah (tax on protected non-Muslims), not accepting it from anyone. He will not accept anything but Islam. And his saying: "that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," to whom? To all of creation, as He the Exalted said:
Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His Servant that he may be to the worlds a warner -
[Al-Furqan 25:1]
: to all the worlds. And He the Exalted said:
Say, [O Muhammad], "O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all, [from Him] to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death." So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered prophet, who believes in Allah and His words, and follow him that you may be guided.
[Al-A'raf 7:158]
: so he is a Messenger to all of creation. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) swore an oath:
He said that no one, whether Jew or Christian, will hear of it and then not believe in what he brought, except that he will be among the companions of the Fire.
. And for this reason, we believe and hold that all the Christians, Jews, and others among the disbelievers are all among the people of the Fire, because this is the testimony of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And Paradise is forbidden to them because they are disbelievers, enemies of Allah and His messengers, enemies of Ibrahim, Nuh, Muhammad, Musa, 'Isa, and all the messengers. They are upon nothing. And his saying:
Muhammad is His Apostle
Sahih al-Bukhari 2157
along with his saying:
that you testify that there is no god but Allah
Sahih Muslim 8a
these two are the conditions of worship, and they are: sincerity to Allah, and following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Because whoever says: "There is no god but Allah" is sincere to Allah, and whoever testifies that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah follows the Messenger of Allah and does not follow anyone else. For this reason, these two are counted as one pillar of the pillars of Islam, because they return to one thing, which is the validation of worship, because worship is not valid except in accordance with these two testimonies: the testimony of "There is no god but Allah," by which there is sincerity, and "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," by which there is following. And Allah grants success.
The reader: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted, in the context of the hadith of Jibril:
And he said: O Muhammad
, in the context of the hadith of 'Umar "
He knelt before him placed his palms on his thighs and said: Muhammad, inform me about al-Islam. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Al-Islam implies that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and you establish prayer, pay Zakat, observe the fast of Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to the (House) if you are solvent enough (to bear the expense of) the journey.
Sahih Muslim 8a
